Default Hervey Bay & Fraser Island???

What are the key things to do when visiting this part of the world? Am planning a trip. Either going north or south from Mooloolaba, not sure which yet. But heard good things about Hervey Bay & Fraser Island, whale watching etc. And I believe it will be warmer. Plan to go in Aug 06, this month. Any views??
Cheers

Hervey bay seems to be so far as tourists go, the gateway to Fraser Island. But I like Hervey Bay on its own merits, its a nice wee town with a beach and pier of sorts, decent restaurants, nice relaxed laid back semi-tropical atmosphere.

Fraser Island is unique, we had a lovely day there a couple of years back, we booked a 1-day four wheel drive trek. The rainforest is lovely, you walk through it and the sound of the birds and cicadas is deafening, amazing! Swimming in the creeks and lakes is pretty special too.

I've attached some Fraser Island photos for you.

Hi

One of the more magical moments in my long(ish) life was flat on my back on the water's edge at Lake Mackenzie (spelling?) on Fraser Island at midnight seeing the shooting stars in a black sky

The island is a real treat and the number of visitors each day is strictly controlled - supposedly.

The following day we were close up to mum and baby(?) whales breaching in Hervey Bay.

How good a weekend was that?

Yep...... go for it. Would expect the temperatures in late August to be around 70 - 75 in old money ......... unless any Queenslanders can confirm differently?

Fraser Island is amazing We did 3 days on Fraser and could honestly spend another week there just kicking back and chillin'. We saw dingoes, giant turtles, manta rays and sharks off Indian Heads. Swam in Lake Mackenzie, and lake Wabi (after hiking over the sand blow ) and bathed in the Champagne pools which were brilliant.
We caught the ferry from Rainbow beach which in itself is a lovely little place and worth a visit just to go on the Carlow Sand Blow and take in the view at the end.

Both Hervey Bay and Fraser Island are great places to visit.

Fraser Island itself is amazing, my wife and I were only there for a day but we intend to go back (and take our little boy along with us this time).

Just come back from 4 days at Hervey Bay and it was brilliant. Fabulous beaches, great restaurants, everybody very friendly.

We took our boat and went across to Fraser Island, really lovely, as well as going whale watching.

Also went to Susan River Ranch for 3 hours horse back riding. They also do water skiing there on the most beautiful dam.

We are actually going back at the end of November.

We have an 18 foot bowrider and we had no problems whatsoever, there are plenty of boat ramps around the area...although the day we went to Fraser we launched the boat from the Main Marina at the end of Boat Harbour Drive.
