Hervey Bay

Hi
Has anyone been to Hervey Bay. Going out there in March/April and will be visiting Hubbys cousin. Is it the kind of place where we will want to stay for a week or is it the back of beyond and we will be wanting to leave after a couple of days.
Thanks
Jaqui:)

Hi

Hervey Bay is ok. Quite spread out but it has some nice places to eat. The main draw for travellers are the trips to Fraser Island-the largest sand island in the world. It is really worth the trip, camp if you have time. Probably the only place you will see australian native wild horses called brumbie's and if you lucky dingos.

Have a great trip:beer:

Watch out for those dingos, one made off with my rolled up sleeping bag from our camp site!. Found it a couple hundred metres down the beach. They are really crafty & daring.

Don't forget the humpbacks which visit every year. Wonderful sight.

Best for Fraser Island

The island is the hilight as everyone says, you can rent a 4x4 in Hervey Bay and take it across, there are some great campsites on the island with some stunning views. Its worth a trip.

Hi Jaqui

Also have relatives in Hervey Bay, stayed there for three months a few years ago. Beautiful place and as everyody says Fraser Island well worth a visit. However with three teenage children and a four year old we decided it was a bit quiet and isolated for the older ones so have settled in Buderim, about 2 1/2 hours south of Hervey Bay and 1 hour north of Brisbane.

Warning about Fraser Island

Just a warning about Fraser Island, the dingos there are a bit of a menace. They have become very tame (but NOT domesticated) because of the huge influx of tourists & consequently their interaction with people but they are still a wild dog & can be very dangerous. A young boy (8 I think, so not that small!) was killed by a dingo on Fraser Island just a couple of years ago & many other people have been mauled & bitten. They are very cunning & will steal things as Amazulu has already experienced & are very brazen about stealing food etc, particularly around the camping areas. My niece had the side of her tent ripped & a hole chewed in the side of her esky (coldbox) when she was there earlier in the year. Be warned!!!

Hervey Bay is lovely but a bit quiet for some people. Depending on what sort of people you are, you may love it or hate it. Im the sort of person who likes solitude & a relaxed way of life so I would be happy living there, but I can see that it wouldnt suit some people. But for a weeks holiday, as long as you arent expecting the bright lights of Hollywood, you should be fine. :)

BTW, brumbies aren't actually native horses, although they do run wild on Fraser Island & in other places like the Snowy Mountains :)
