Default Here comes the sun - be careful

Serious thread.

I have just had a big chunk of skin taken from the back of my hand which required eight stitches to repair the wound

I had the stitches taken out yesterday. The whole thing was an unpleasant and painful experience. The problem was a tiny patch of dry rough skin which turned out to be turning cancerous

I have also been referred to the skin clinic to remove some similar patches from my face.

I do not sunbathe....these have been caused by going about my daily business. I usually smother in suncream if I know I will be outside for any length of time.

I can not say that these have been caused by living over here as I have always been an outdoorsy type of person (fishing, walking, football etc.etc.).

Please do not ignore any skin blemishes, no matter how innocuous they may seem...and try and avoid the sun if possible.....you really do not want to go through a similar experience if you can avoid it.

Thanks

The results so far are OK

The scary bit was that the skin blemsh was so harmless looking and I only mentioned it to my GP in passing.

If anyone has anything unusual on their skin they should get it checked out ASAP.

As one of the nurses I work with said:
"pommy skin wasn't designed for aussie sun"....not sure it is that simple but we really need to remain vigilant

Yeh I've seen that before where a blemish needed moving and it looked like nothing to worry about. Good that it was sorted mate

Golly. I hope you are feeling better and it hasn't affected your ability to charm the ladies. That's the scary thing about skin cancer - they're often missed again and again by skin specialists. A friend of my mum's died in the UK a few years ago of m. melanoma and had no primary site at all.

That's a stupid thing to say, in the time white man has been here they havent evolved different skin, Aussies are just as prone to skin cancer as anyone else.
Glad it is all looking good.

Thanks for your good wishes

I'm just hoping that the lesions on my face can be treated by freezing

When the lesions are cut out a large area around them also has to be removed in case it has started to spread.

The scar on my hand will be about an inch long

Not so bad on the back of my hand....but imagine having inch long scars on your face

Is a suntan really worth it?

Good luck G, it's something everyone should be wary of, no excuses these days.

I love playing cricket but hell I do think of the consequences of that much time in the sun ... slip, slap, slop it y'all.
