United Airlines flight 840 heading for Los Angeles was forced to return to Sydney International Airport following a problem on board.
The flight, carrying 260 passengers, took off about 3pm (AEST) and was 90 minutes into the flight when the pilot made the decision to return to Sydney, a spokesman of the airline said.
He would not detail the nature of any problems onboard and refused to confirm whether there were any problems with the plane's landing gear or in the cockpit.
The flight landed at about 5.45pm (AEST) in a secure section of the airport and was surrounded by security forces.
Channel Ten news reported the incident was classified as a Category 3 emergency - the highest type ever at the airport.
NSW Fire Brigades and the NSW Ambulance Service had multiple vehicles on the scene, and police closed roads leading to the airport.

Passengers are currently getting off the plane and the media is making up possibilities and rumours.
1 someone attacked the cockpit door
2 someone missed security checks (not the first time) and they are all being re-screened)
3 Pissed passenger causing a ruckous.

The aircraft was cordoned off by emergency vehicles and all 246 passengers and crew were being disembarked.
The airline said the decision to return was made when "an object which raised some security suspicions was found was found on board".
United said passengers were expected to fly out again at 11am tomorrow.
Sydney radio 2UE said reports from Canberra said the emergency was "some kind of bomb hoax".
Radio 2GB reported a fire in the hydraulics might have caused the flight to be aborted.
The plane landed about 5.45pm (AEST).

Here's the CNN coverage.
United flight returns to Sydney
Tuesday, July 27, 2004 Posted: 0840 GMT (1640 HKT)
SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) -- A United Airlines flight has landed safely at Sydney airport after the pilot aborted the Los Angeles-bound flight following a threat.
United Airlines flight 840 carrying 246 passengers and 18 crew was bound for Los Angeles but turned back to Sydney as a precautionary measure about 90 minutes after takeoff, a spokeswoman for Sydney Airport told CNN late Tuesday.
She said the aircraft left Sydney at 2.30 p.m. (00.30 a.m. ET) local time and returned at 5.50 p.m. (3.50 a.m. ET). She said the passengers were now in the process of leaving the plane.
She said there was no attempt to break into the cockpit, despite media reports to that effect.
The pilot had raised a "security issue", she said, but gave no further details other than that the pilot chose to abort the flight and return to Sydney.
The aircraft, Flight UA840, is quarantined at the end of the runway at Sydney International Airport.
Sydney Airport has been shut down for the time being.
An airport official quoted by local television station Sky TV said they believe a letter claiming a bomb was aboard the flight was left at the terminal.
At the weekend, a Europe-based terror group linked to al Qaeda threatened bloodshed on Australian soil.
The Tawhid Islamic group, in a statement posted on an Islamic extremist Web site, said that if Australian military forces did not leave Iraq, "we will shake the earth under your feet as we did in Indonesia".
That is a reference to the October 2002 Bali bombings in which 202 people died, 88 of them Australians.
The group said the battle would be taken to Australia, saying "our arms are long and capable of reaching you".
