Talk about fussy !
ha ha - like partners daughter, will only eat Wonder White, no other bread, even white bread!! Beats me how she knows its not WW on the occasions we've tried to sneak it in her lunchbox, but she does!!

i probably shouldn't say this but here goes. maybe you can't get your groceries any cheaper. maybe you're not doing anything wrong. in which case someone else in your family is doing something wrong. i could just be reflecting on my very ex husband who made my life a misery re the grocery bill. better stop there then.

veggie meals are cheap and most people eat far more protein than they need.

Oh yes, I remember those days.... Restaurants every other night, going to the shows, weekends away, .....

Oh well ..... I had a good run, while it lasted, and I suppose I did better than most

No to the restuarants, to expensive. The occasional food court or pizza. And the guy from the pasta restaurant/shop next to Pascal's work fancies Pascal's boss(female, not that it matters..) so they all(3 of them) get a container or 2 of pasta about once a week, for free!!!!!
Used to be fish& chips every week, but they're to oily here for my liking, and better to stay of altogether than look for a better one...
Shows, nooo.
Weekends away, yes, to friends. Going 300km's south saturday for a concert(in a pub), then staying at friends house.

Back to cooking, what I do a lot, so I don't have to cook so often(can get boring and if I don't have time to be creative..), I just make enough for 4, and freeze half

How do you know they're cooked / how long do you cook them for? I've always been put off buying them as I wouldn't know what to do!

When you buy them they are a creamy colour....when you cook them, they go more of a white....They dont take long to cook at all, but if you cook them with the bacon, by the time the bacon is cooked, they are well and truely done. If you are doing them on their own, usually just a couple of minutes each side. You will see them change colour as you cook them.

Can't remember the last time I had lamb, it must be 3 or 4 years. Just can't afford to in the UK. the price is criminal

All meat is, unless you like Tesco's Lips and Eye Lid surprise a.k.a. no frills sausages!

Mind in 1997 Australian meat used to be mega cheap, I saw the prices really come up in the last few years there.

Scallops are like most seafood they need cooking quickly and in a hot pan otherwise they go rubbery like Calamari that's been overcooked.
We usually buy them straight from the boat and cook them in garlic and butter for about 3 mins. The pan needs preheating though before you add the garlic and butter then a quick stirr around and they're done.
If you buy them prepared and sat on there own half shell they can be grilled for about 5 mins, turned half way, seasoned with salt and pepper and a squeeze of lemon/lime juice
