thats say $275,000 ozzie at the mo.
you can buy a 2 bed unit very near the city. alternatively an older 3/4 bedder say 5/10 kms from the city or a new 2/3 bed town house. If you go right out 25/35km you will get a new 3/4 bed in an emerging area. depends on where you want to live.
mortgages are easily come by as long as you have a job and a few months employment. probably helps to rent for a bit and start your credit history here - maybe hire a fridge or something just to kick it off.
one hint, the advertised prices here can be very inflated. Sometimes 10% even 20% over what they really expect. any negotiation here is best starting off a good 20% below the asking price.
The Courier Mail now publishes a list of auction results actual sale prices each week and it can be useful to study these for a while to see what the things are selling for rather than what they are being advertised for.
there is a web site http://www.homepriceguide.com.au/ which can provide reports for certain areas of actual sale prices which may be worth acquiring prior to any purchase.
