We are also in Perth and my husband has also struggled hard to find employment. We arrived in Sept 08 and he has just started a full-time job!!
This is after hundreds of applications and dozens of interviews. He has been taken on through an agency (started Wednesday) and I am keeping everything crossed that it works out for him.
He also very rarely received responses from applications and even when interviewed didn't get always get told that he hadn't got it.
This left him very down and depressed and it was difficult to keep him motivated. It was hard to know what to say to keep his spirts up after all that time.
So I really feel for you and know how difficult it can be.
The advice above is great and I think it is what lead to this job opportunity which is adapt the CV for every position, it is time consumming but I think it works.
My husband has been working part-time at Burswood while looking for something else. The shifts are anti-social and it was difficult as I work Monday to Friday so it meant that we only saw each other on Sunday!! But they are hiring at the moment if your husband wants to give it a go!!

We arrived in November & OH only started work 5 weeks ago & he has had to move for that too! I am sure a month feels like a long time to him but it isn't really.
Just to add to all the other great suggestions, try joining the Lions club or some other organisation. he needs to meet people & get networking.

Ive been following your posts even before we moved out. How are you getting on especially at work, do you like it? Hows your hubby getting on with his job?
We've been to the Redlynch area before and absolutely loved it! You made a good choice with the location, it's paradise.

Looks like he might start volunteer job to do with gardening and general maintainance on the beaches etc. seeing a guy next week about it, he was the only one so far who replied to him. Fingers crossed.

You could try heading down to the local Bunnings personally to drop off a CV. They just love people with a great friendly attitude. Good luck

Gardening would be a good one to get into as there seems to be plenty job adverts for maintenance work, especially for the councils. You have already been given loads of great advice so far, but all i can say is make sure your cover letter is outstanding. When a company advertises a postion they get 2-3 hundred replies at the moment so i've been told, and the first thing they read is the cover letter. When they get that amount of replies they can't afford someone to sit there and reply to everyone, which is very frustrating i know.
Also i found in Perth, it's who you know not what you know. So make sure you tell everyone you meet your predicament.

When you apply for a job through Job.wa gov the actual employer can wait 6-8 weeks to even see the applications. They all go to one main area and then get distributed to each source. I have got 4 jobs this way but I never heard from any of them before 6 weeks. My husband has a government job as well and he also waited 6 weeks to even get asked to interview. So dont give up it's still early days.

Being on the other side of the coin - when we post a seek ad, we get 100's of emails, and unfortunately, a lot of them are a) unqualified b) os candidates who are looking for sponsorship and c) stock applications that are not tailored. We dont have time to reply to anything other than the prime candidates.
Advice - Work on the cover letter - sounds old fashioned, but that is the 20 seconds that someone will make their decision on whether they spend another minute to read your cv or not.
Make sure you spell it out, some cvs are just labrinth, tell me what your skills are, tell me what licences you have, and tell me how to get hold of you at anytime of the day.
And four weeks is far too soon to give up.

Just restarting the emigration process and hoping to be in Perth in about 18 months. I was intending emigrating last year, but had to put things on hold. Anyway, I had contact with a few agents and they were all very good and had a number of opportunities. They could set up interviews in a metter of weeks if I could raise the airfare!
Not sure if these are of any use, but might be worth giving a go. If they cant help, they may know someone who can.

We arrived to Perth just over a month ago and my husband is struggling to find a job. He sent endless of applications through SEEK and the government jobsearch website and nobody is getting back to him. That is the problem really that he gets no reply at all from anyone, they don't even bother to say no to him. He even tried volunteer jobs to get to know people and get some experience and even they don't reply! He worked for Royal Mail in the UK and already tried AusPost but they wouldn't employ him either because he hasn't got motorcycle licence and they have appearently no other vacancies in other departments. He is now really fed up and wants to go home and I find it difficult to try to encourage him to give it longer and keep trying.
And before anybody says that what did we expect especially in these times of recession, we are aware of all that, but what worries me is that nobody replying any of his e-mails, not even the volounteer organisations. Is this the norm? Would he be better off if he called people instead of e-mailing them? Has anybody else been through similar experiences and felt that just hitting a brick wall?
He is really hard working and a lovely person and seems to me nobody wants to give him a chance. And it really upsets me seeing him like this, and I really want to avoid going back to England.

I'm not sure about other WA Gov't departments, but Health has put a moretoreum on new hires for other than medical/nursing staff. We had a meeting last week and our department head said he would not be accepting any resignations from staff because they wouldn't be able to replace them. No new hires until at least July - maybe longer.
