Help in getting work in Perth?
 

Hello,
I’m currently living in the UK but am moving over to live in Butler for 12 months on a working visa in August. I was wondering are there many jobs out there (Clarkson or anywhere in Perth), i.e. happy to do any work. I lost my job in the UK a few months ago and have applied for hundreds of jobs and had several interviews but haven’t had any luck. I spoke to my aunt who lives out there and she suggested I come out and try my luck out here. I know I’m only on working visa but would be great to get some work out here with the possibility of me applying to stay out there permanently. Any advice or help would be much appreciated

Best idea is to scour www.seek.com.au and also www.careerone.com.au

Have your cv looking spiffy, up to date - which I assume it is if you're applying for jobs and keep a positive outlook and a smile on your face - much easier said than done I know.

Contact agencies and send them your cv, tell them how keen you are - don't just say can't ge a job here so last resort trying there.. let them think you're super super keen and willing to learn and bring your skills from over here. Let them know when you're due to arrive, and include the info that you have a visa set up already - set up appointments if you can so a few days after landing you have already made contact and have appoitments to go to.

Research through google.com.au or the like for companies you want to work for - contact them, send them your CV etc.. etc..

Basically what I'm saying is be as proactive as you can be. Keep on at them. Be keen as mustard and keep that smile firmly on.

Best advice I can give you mate is put all your stuff on a memory stick, cv, scanned copies of your refs + visa. Paper application forms do not seem to exist here its all over the web but phone calls following up applications pay dividends, thats how I got my job I was unsuccessful with my first app so i phoned them up, got given another interview at another branch, didnt get that but did well in the interview so got a second interview just around the corner from where I live and got the job ! a case of luck and working at it mate but chin up and remember that memory stick !

My advice wold be have a look on Seek and see what agencies have the kind of jobs that you want, and then sign up to those agencies. They will then work to find you a job because they want the commission, and they will often have access to positions that are never advertised. Plus you generally only have to do one application/interview with the agency to be in line for lots of jobs. Some of the jobs may be short term, but 1) you're on a WHV, and 2) if you do a good job on one assignment, you'll be first in line for the next one that comes up. I'm not sure of the conditions of the WHV, but I'm sure you would be! There's no harm in emphasizing the point that you are looking for a bit of different work experience - employers may hesitate to employ people who are here for the 'holiday' aspect of the working holiday visa. Say that you are staying with your aunt, at her house, as that indicates that you are not in a camper van with your mates/lover. Also worth looking at are the agencies that work in both the UK and Aus - I've worked with both Reed and Randstad in the UK and here - they may be able to help you out before you come over. Also, not sure how much luck you will have with jobs as far north as Butler, but if you can get to Clarkson, you're probably better off getting the train to Perth.

Thanks mate that's much appreciated, I did print off some paper copies and had put CV and refs on memory stick but didnt think to scan a copy of Visa on there so thank you so much I will do that now. Hayes have asked me to come in and see them once I have arrived and sent me some paperwork to fill out and send back so fingers crossed. Thanks again for the advice and info.
