Thank for the tip re photocopying passports etc.
Sorry to here about your awful start, hopefully you will have a better ime of it in Melbourne

Use technology. Scan passports/visas/driving license and store as image files on-line, add list of addresses/card numbers/contacts then you can retrieve info from anywhere in the world if the worst happens. Most ISPs give you enough free web-space to do this.
