Hello from Brits in Japan!

Ok, I know it may seem a little odd that we're Brits in Japan posting on the Australia forum but I can explain....honest!
Husband, son & I came to Japan (for a second time) 6 months ago for an 18 month contract (Husband's contract) but it looks like there is a possibility of the contract finishing sometime early in '07. We don't want to go back to the UK so are looking at OZ, NZ, USA & HK!
We have previously looked at moving to Adelaide on the SIR visa (Husband is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer) but at the time he didn't have the required 2 yrs of continuous employment due to taking a year out in 03/04. So this coming January he'll qualify with the 2 continuous employment. We're just starting to look into it all - looks like a flippin' nightmare to do a visa application from Japan but I guess it can be done?!
Can anyone tell me about the 457 Temp visa? We're in Japan on a temp visa so it would suit us to do the same in Oz before comitting to the 2 yrs required on the SIR.
Are there any other Mech Eng's on the forum?
Anyway,..... I'm a Southerner (Sussex) and hubby is a Northerner (North Yorks) & we have a gorgeous 4 year old boy! We're in our mid 30's and we were living in County Durham before upping sticks to Japan.
So that's us in a nutshell! Perhaps you lovely people could point me in the right direction of any posts that have covered all the above issues before?
