Re: Haven't had any power since 3pm yesterday...
We had a hurricane in 2004 when I lived East Coast Canada. 5 days without power and as we were on an acreage we had septic tanks so couldn't even use toilet properly as the pumps were electric. Disgusting, horrible 5 days so I have every sympathy

We're lucky here in that the septic tank can look after itself for a few days so long as we don't send too much in its direction. The ancient one we had in the UK used to give up if the weather got too cold. One winter a frog climbed into the outlet and got frozen there and blocked up the system. Luckily it was a man's designated task to unblock it

If your power was out for more than 48hrs you qualify for $1000 per adult & $400 per child as a compensation payment from the Govt. There is also another $180.00 available per adult on prepaid credit card [only usable at food shops] if you lost food due to the + 48hr power outage.
In 2011 we qualified but didn't claim, nobody pinned a medal on our chests for not claiming it. This year I've lost a weeks worth of work as well as a lot of adhesive as the home I was tiling flooded. I've also done 2 days clean up in Gympie with the QFRS task force & the same in Maryboro'. I've earned it this time & we've claimed it.
What irks is the jobless ferals who don't need to get to work that were queuing 300 strong outside the local centrelink office for their $1000 while us unpaid, yellow clad, volunteers were slogging our guts out across the road swilling raw sewage from the streets. In times like this why aren't the jobless youths put to work sweeping streets for their handouts? Instead they cashed their $1000 bucks at the bottle shop & sat watching us work while drinking ice cold beers.

If you log on to your local council's website you should see if you are entitled to any disaster relief. There are several different categories if you live in an area that has been declared a disaster area.
Here's our local council page as an example http://www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au/
Food lost from the freezer is usually covered by home contents insurance.
