Question Has your working life improved?

After reading the thread on how some people are treated in the workplace in Australia, I am curious to know if anyone has changed their career once they have moved to Oz.

Or if anyone has had better opportunities with their working life, achieved any dreams or just found a career that they couldn't get in to in the UK?

I would love to do some writing in Oz and although I have done some here for a veterinary journal, I do wonder if certain career opportunities are more plentiful or accessible than they are in England.

Have any of you found the 'perfect' job in your new life?

Didn't change jobs - although it was considered - but ended up working less hours for more money. Most of my employers seem to understand work-life balance giving you time off work just like that - on a sort of flexible basis (obviously you need to get the work done). Mine, I discovered, don't even record the days (ie. as personal or annual leave!).

Edit: should say all this is very helpful for bringing up baby daughters.
They are also into health at work as well as team-building exercises; we have lots of events, and we get presents, tickets, tokens, massages, fruit - there's an active fitness session and pilates/yoga for those who want it - cost - a couple of dollars per sesssion.

I will admit to being a big scared starting over. It took me a while to build a reputation with temp agencies and you start off with basic shite jobs and work your way up.

I have a few dreams/aspirations but dont know quite which way to turn. Its nice to read what you have said though, encouraging.

I was talking about this today with my pal and I said I actually feel quite lost when it comes to writing.

I know I can talk utter bollocks in my blog but to do it on a serious level I would not know where to begin.

Wish I had a mentor sometimes.

My 'working life' has completely gone down the swanny since arriving in Oz! In the UK I was able to get part time work pretty easily and had a 9.30am - 2.30pm Monday - Thursday job. Here its just so hard to find the equivalent. I dont want to put my daughter into before and after school care and so I'm stuck at home

Thats the reason I've started TAFE - hoping to do website design from home and earn a living that way.

Hi PP, positive post from me. RN ICU 18 months qualified in the Uk, crappy shifts and nights ect. 2 years on and in Oz and I work Mon-Thurs office hours as a Clinical Educator.
I doubt I would be where I am now in the UK going on what I have been told.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do, you never know until you have tried

What about a life coach to shove you along a bit?

Not changed my job as such ...but have gone from working fulltime on a Acute ward, to working part-time for a specialist Psych Agency ...I tell them when I want to work each week....I now have a few 'regular' Acute wards ...so don't feel like I'm here, there and everywhere ...and with the money I get...can easily afford the drop in hours.

Not really taken working life seriusly out here since I'd just graduated and wanted a break before 'real life' started up.

Except I'm regularly doing 60+ hours a week so I'm not quite sure where the 'break' part comes in.

I'm the opposite - my working life/prospects will be better in the UK for the industry I'm going into (legal industry). And I'll actually be doing less hours for more money!

I wouldnt mind a life coach but I suppose its money I cant afford at the moment.

Its just one of those periods in my life where I feel Im floundering career wise, where I sort of know what would make me happy but am not sure if such a job would exist.

(I know it doesnt make sense)
