Default Has anyone took there own car to Oz!!!!

We have managed to get a container for all our furniture to go in when we move over to Perth in July, but I was wondering if anyone knew if we could take our own car? And if so can we just stick it in the container but is there any paperwork that needs to be done!!!!

Does anyone recommend this or had a similar experience?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Brockies,

There have been loads of threads on this in the past so do a search and you'll get loads of info.

From what I've read on here it is very costly and expensive to take a car over. Lots of paperwork and costs.

You can't just stick it in the container and take it unfortunately.

No paperwork needed - just put a blanket over it and hope no one sees

Seriously it has been discussed numerous times and the cost aspect never I repeat never makes sense. Example on a £46K 4x4 it worked out £20K in costs to locate it to Oz.

Simply not worth it unless it's something very special that's worth a bucket over here and not there...

Check out Drive and CarSales to see what used cars are going for over here...

The cheapest car in the UK that would possibly be worth the most money in Oz that I could find was a Mercedes CL500 or CL55. It would cost £30K or so for a 2003/4 model in the UK, you would have to own it for a year, but to buy an Australian model it would cost circa $200 - $230K.

The only obstacles are the taxation (say £20K) and the fact that people are silly about the fact that it would be a personal import (as opposed to all of the other Mercedes that are of course not imported from Germany or South Africa). This might affect resale (but shoudn't).

If you like big V8s, it could be a cheap way to have cool wheels for a while.
