Has anybody heard of Wallerawang NSW?
My husband is trying to persuade me it would be a nice place to live. I am not convinced. Anyone ever heard of it? Thanks.

It's a tiny place in the country, just north of Lithgow. You can see it from miles away because there's a great big power station there.
Lithgow is not a pretty place either. Half the population look like they're close relatives of the people in the local jail.
Can't imagine anyone thinking Wallerawang is a desirable spot to live. Sure your husband isn't pulling your leg?

Lithgow is a frightful place with old and failed industries. If you're thinking of heading in that direction, you would be much better off heading out to Bathurst or even Orange.

A friend of mine lives in Bathurst (about 40 km away), so I tapped him up on your behalf. He had this to say about Wallerawang:
So there you have it - not in any way conclusive, but hopefully some comments that you can make use of.

On the upside, everyone calls it "Wang".
No trains stop at Wang for commuter services. They'd need to drive to Lithgow and get on there. Maybe there's a bus, dunno. But its a shit place to commute from. Its not a great move unless she's going to work in Lithgow or Bathurst
Housing in Bathurst/Orange can still be had for under 300k and there are jobs for people who aren't completely stupid. But the nightlife probably won't pass muster if they like that sort of thing.

In 2010 we were on holiday in Germany and Austria. I told my wife that I wanted to visit a place that I had read about on the internet. Anyway, we drove there (took ages) just so I could have my photo taken standing next to that sign. Super childish I know but I have been called lots of things in my life but mature ain't one of them. My wife was not impressed. My son was
Until we realized (a) Norway was quite a drive away actually and (b) none of us actually had a car.
Ah well.

On the positive side, you aren't far from the Blue Mountains. I will say, looking at it on Wikipedia, the power station looks hideous and it must be depressing if that's the local landmark people set their watch to.
We did consider moving to Orange and Bathurst before deciding to come to WA instead. Orange in particular has a lot of terrific wineries and is becoming something of a foodie destination. Not bad if you end up there.
I do live in a tiny town. You do get used to driving distances pretty fast. 20 km to the nearest supermarket isn't that bad in the country and you can probably drive it faster than you could going from your house to the supermarket in a big city suburb. I routinely drive 5,000 km every month.
Perhaps some Sydneysiders can comment, I would be curious if Orange, Bathurst, and the Blue Mountains are attracting people from the city to relocate, those tired of prices, traffic etc? Or are those people going elsewhere?
That is not a jab at Sydney, every big city has people looking to leave, just like every country region has people looking to move somewhere bigger. I am just wondering about the migration patterns on that side of the country.
Overall, OP, is there a compelling reason to move to Wallerawang besides cheap rent? If not - as another poster said, there are deals to be had elsewhere.

Back in the day, we (ie that bunch of post-finals, drunken sods that I call mates) talked about nicking a road sign from this Austrian town, and then driving all the way up to Norway to nick a second sign, from the town called "Hell". Our puerile noggins thought it would be fun to hang the 2 signs side by side at the dining hall back at the University and watch the rector crap in his academic dress at formal dinner.
