It has to be 40ft

Oh well, I thought all our house contents would fit with a squeeze into a 20ft container..

But after a full examination on our goods it turns out we were miles out and it has to be a 40ft.

£3600 for a 20ft
£5500 for a 40ft.

Still.... it would cost us £30,000 to replace everything we own. £29,000 just for the kids toys :D

It wouldn't be worth sharing part of a container, as the price for what we need was only £250 difference, so its best to have everything in one.

The shippers said that a house with 7 rooms tends to be a 20ftand we have 12 rooms.

Just thought I would share this with anyone who is about to calculate their costings for a shipment accross the world.

Are you sure? We dumped a couple of large wardrobes and some minor bits of flat-pack furniture but otherwise got the contents of a 4 bedroom house into a 20ft with space left over.

Hi,
Im ashamed to admit it but we needed a 40ft too!!. We decluttered, sold, gave away tons of stuff and still couldn't make it to a 20ft, so we bought new stuff and then we still had loads of space in the 40ft. But there was no way we could of squeezed it all into a 20ft. Our belongings are delivered to us next Tuesday. Haven't seen our stuff since 16th June, its all been in storage this end. Fingers crossed its all ok!
Good luck!

we managed to just get everything in a 20ft container - no beds or bedroom furniture though (this was planned).

the only thing that didn't get a rid to Australia was the futon - on loss there IMO - OH was a bit peeed of about it though.

I do think that a 40ft container would have been too big though

Yes of course, you can ship anything. No hollow wood furniture like wicker though.

You got too much bloody stuff, man! Just like us!!! :D

How much over a 20' are you? Quotes on our stuff are coming in at 1300/1400 cu feet so we're going to try to declutter as much as we can - also got three large bookcases and a triple pine wardrobe that we're now going to try to flat-pack to save on space! Dave's idea - I'm not convinced! If we're still over we're have to send the rest as groupage.

Hi

We're in the same situation - our guy says we are 3 x 3 piece suites over - whatever volume that is !! :(

When they count rooms do they just mean reception rooms and bedrooms or do they include kitchen and bathroom(s) ?

Anyway, at least it means I can go shopping now ;)
