Question Hardwearing carpet?

Before we moved in last January (new house) we ordered our carpet, it is supposedly hardwearing with a 15 year guarantee and cost just over $4,000. We thought we'd rather spend the extra on something that wouldnt need replacing for 10 years rather than buy something cheaper that would need doing after a couple, and we upgraded to the good underlay.

We had noticed a few "plucks" in the carpet, mainly where there is a joint in our bedroom going into the WIR and also by the doors (this is down to the installation). The cat has plucked a bit in our theatre room and DH managed to do a big pluck in DD' sbedroom when he moved the wicker chair.

Along with that in the theatre room you can see where we sit to watch TV - bearing in mind that in summer we dont spend that much time in this room so it's really only a few months wear.

Yesterday DH whizzed round with the Dyson, as he's hoovering in our bedroom one of the plucks in the WIR gets sucked up and now there is a bloody huge thread and a bare bit of carpet.

I am going to phone them today about this, they have already been out and inpsected the wear and the other plucks (yes, we did own up that two of them were "self inflicted" so to speak) and get onto the manufactuers, although they did say that the carpet in the theatre room is not threadbare so not sure what they can do.

Bearing in mind the cost and the apparent 15 year guarantee am I being unreasonable in expecting it to at least last 10 years without looking worn? We are also disapointed about how easy it is to pluck. Had we known we'd have these problems we'd have bought cheap stuff and used the money to have heating installed...

Anyone else got one of these style carpets? And anyone know where we stand regarding the guarantee and workmanship?

Hiya

Having run a flooring business in the uk... and somewhat experienced with floor coverings, albeit carpets aint my thang...

All i can say is, carpets have a Warranty, and a Wear Rating.

If during the period of the warranty and within the constraints of "traffic" which is wear rating, it is fair to presume your carpet should stay in top top condition over a period within the guarantee as shown at time of purchase.

The only aside to this, is natural degrading wear and tare.

I would, email and fax a letter stating your concerns to the carpet store, along with original invoice number and carpet details.

Highlight the issues you have experienced, and ask what they are prepared to do.

Also point out , you have no problems with them as a company, and will await their professional opinion. Dependant on which you will take further action if deemed necessary to have the carpet inspected for fault.

Sounds like loop pile which appears to be all the rage in OZ at the moment (I hate it), you pull a loop and a whole row unravels. How easilly depends on the quality of the carpet. If a loop gets pulled cut it off or as you have found out if some how it gets pulled by the vacum or anything else the whole row can unravel (like unraveling kniting) the reason being that the thread is not locked on the reverse side like traditional cut pile carpet.

I would suggest that the quality is not as you have been led to believe or advertised. Kick up a hell of a stink and say you want it replaced.

Yes, think that is it

Will write them a letter today putting it all in writing, apparently the manufacturer is due to come down in a few weeks and will inspect.
