Hardly an Immigration Flood
Finally some cool heaxed analysis of refugees etc. from a regional newspaper, seems more tolerance in the "real Australia" versus cosmopolitan cities?
IMMIGRATION has held a special place in the fears of many Australians but the figures tell a different story to that told by Liberal MP Kevin Andrews. We're hardly over-stuffed. The data on asylum seekers and refugees in particular provides some much-needed perspective on the current national debate.

If anything being number 2 in the world for accepting refugees from the UN program would reinforce the concept that Australia is doing its part and we should retain our robust policy.

If the hairdressing & cooking schools are 'bogus' then surely they should crack down on them...problem solved. Or would that affect the inflow of $'s to the education sector?

Kevin Andrews
In 2007-08, 173,290 people permanently migrated to Australia. In addition, there were another 544,000 temporary migrants to the country, excluding the five million visitors. That’s close to three-quarters of a million extra people residing here in a year.

Punch response
When Mr Andrews informed Punch readers of the latest migration figures of 173,290 permanent migrants, he neglected to mention that in the last year of the Howard government the number of permanent migrants to Australia reached 184,438.

Actual numbers
Migration Program Outcomes Statistics
2005-06 142,930 actual
2006-07 148,200 actual (last full year of John Howard)
2007-08 158,630 actual
2008-09 171,320 actual
2009-10 168,700 proposed
http://www.immi.gov.au/media/statist...ts/migrant.htm
That 183,438 could of course have been a number from the Sydney Morning Herald in July, when they quoted:
2008/09 253,415 in net migration (total arrivals minus total departures)
2007/08 184,438 in net migration (total arrivals minus total departures)
But then, that is not the same statistic that Kevin Andrews was talking about, and that would be like comparing oranges to strawberries !
I wonder if the Punch have a political alliance, or just make mistakes like the rest of us ?

Re: Hardly an Immigration Flood
New Zealand immigrants are NEVER counted in the migration programme figures so they NEVER will be accurate.
Its estimated over 30,000 NZ citizens migrated to OZ in the last year, so you can add that on top of the immigration figures.
