Default Hamsters

Are hamsters available as pets in Australia?

Our hamster has just died (she was an old lady so I'm sad but not too upset) and I'm wondering whether to take the cage with us (we are planning on going to Sydney) or selling it here. It's a rotastack cage with lots of bits.

Thanks

Anne

Certainly banned in Queensland, but I don't know if its a national thing. Poor little hamsters - mind you, they probably wouldn't like the heat!

Looks like it's ebay for the cage then.

I'm going to miss having a hamster around.

You can own rats and mice. Either are probably better to own as they're diurnal and you don't have to fight the nocturnal habits of a hamster.

Rats are a much cleverer and playful animal to own IMHO. You can teach them all sorts of trcicks.

So, look forward to having a rat around!

Nice thought, but if spottydog is anything like me, theres no replacement for a hamster. Had lots when I was a kid, and would love to have another one.....in fact it was very close - hamster vs The Bloke.......Uk vs Aus. Luckily for him, I decided I could cope without the hamster, though the girls at work did get me a clockwork one just before I left!

Pollyanna you're right. Rats and Mice just don't do it for me and given we're at work all day the nocturnalness of a hamster isn't a problem as they have generally woken up at teatime to see what treat they will get .

I guess I'm going to have to cope without hamsters (although the other half keeps going on about getting a Wallaby now )

Need a pretty big cage! And I now have a surreal vision of a wallaby going round on a hamster wheel.....

My mates kept hamsters, but they were always snuffing it
When we were young (and foolish) we had a rat called, "Ow you Bast@rd!" but he ran off under the floor boards.
