If I were in Perth I'd discount Australia altogether and go somewhere in SE Asia instead.

I just had a holiday in Malaysia and it was very nice. However, Australia has its charms. The natural environment is in much better shape for a start.

I hear what you're saying... but at the moment it offers poor value for money IMO.

Won't be returning!

My husband would not thank me for a trip to Malaysia. Not very special, since we lived in Singapore for years.

RE weather: We're off to Port Douglas next week for some sun, but the weather forecast is worse than here (Perth).

Despite the chance of rain you'll be far warmer...Sat night min is 7 in Perth and 19 in Port Douglas. If the rain clears, which it usually would in winter, you'll be set

If you want to go somewhere different... and still stay in Australia... you could do a lot worse than giving Darwin a visit.

It really did seem like another World when I visited there.

There are some quite unique places and attractions around the City (and surrounding areas - like Katherine Gorge which is stunning ) and I think there's a very different vibe in the NT compared with many other areas of Australia.

If someone was visiting Australia and could visit two places, I'd say do the icons in Sydney, then do Australia in the NT.

Thanks, been there already.

It doesn't have to be Australia, just not too long a flight from Perth. And something a bit special.

Had to google that.

Ok, will look into that when he's not hovering.

Let me rephrase my OP.....

Please recommend "special" places to go that are less than 6 hours from Perth or 4 from Sydney. Ideally it'd be a tropical paradise but with stuff for a 6 year old to do. Weather in March likely to be warm enough to lie around drinking cocktails and reading books.

Well I'm not a spammer and since someone has dragged up this Hamilton Island thread again... let me remind everyone that I think Hamilton Island is over-rated, over-priced and I don't like the swimming opportunities there and I think the weather kind of sucks there too. Also there was lots of construction work going on outside where we stayed there once and it was noisy and obstructed our view.

Don't know about Dubai. Probably kind of sandy.

We stayed in Palm Cove last year (about 20mins out of Cairns towards Pt Douglas). It's gorgeous. Has a laid back hippy vibe with cool bars and expensive hotels. Worth popping by while passing.
