Hairdresser training in Oz
 

I used to be a hairdresser some years ago (well quite a lot really lol) and am thinking of retraining and getting back into it as a lot of things have changed since i was working in a salon - i have my City and Guilds qualification but dont know whether it is worth anything over there or not.
I am thinking of doing my NVQ level 3 and then hopefully a level 4 qualification - now the big question is.....am i better off doing my training in the UK or going on a student visa to Oz and doing it there. I have looked at the costs of training and with a bit of saving can afford the international fees - just.
I am now 40 years old and would then like to stay in Oz - is that possible or will i be asked to leave once my training is over :eek: ?????
Are there still restrictions on how many hours you can work on a student visa and does that apply to my hubby as well or will he be able to get a full time job - he is a general builder over here but coz he doesnt do just one specific trade we cant get a visa through him.

Fee's vary but I paid $17k to do a Cert III in Hairdressing.

Remember you HAVE to have private healthcare too - $700 odd a year and pay for kids schooling fee's too - My 2 cost $32k for 2 years.

Yes, if you've done 2 years of study and gain a Cert III or higher you will be able to go on a Graduate Visa and then you have to get 12 months work experience in 18 and then you can apply for PR.

As far as I know you are both restricted to 20 hours per week still while your course is in session. If you go to a TAFE which will take breaks over Xmas etc you can work full time then, not your partner, but if a private school like I went to you are pretty much stuck with the 20 hour rule for the duration as it didn't take breaks.

Plus side to the private type is you can complete your course in 16 months! ... :)

Thanks for the info - i knew the fees were quite steep $17K - thankfully dont have school age kids now so dont need to worry about school fees - didnt know how much the health care would be so thanks for that as well.
Where did you do your training at and is it as good as the UK as you hear about people complaining about the hairdressers over there and the mullet cuts they do ;).
Think hubby would be quite glad of the 20 hours a week working rule as he is out till 7pm most nights now :(.
Big thing we would be worried about is moving over there and then not being able to stay as we would be bringing 3 dogs and the thought of them being in quarantine for 6 months if we had to go back would kill me - so wondering whether it might be better to do level 3 over here and then apply for a trade visa and then if accepted i could do level 4 so as can open own shop over there then - well hopefully :) - so much to weigh up.

I did no training in the UK and the training in my opinion was decent. yeah they love an ole mullet! ...lol. (stop it Paul!!)

Just be very wary about these 20 hour pw rules as we both had big probs finding work. Even a lot of part time work can be 22 - 25 hours! I could go on heaps about the 20 hours but will refrain!

Ok, you can ALL come over, we did and bought our dog too (3 months quarantine by the way ... ;) ) but it was always, and still is the biggest gamble of our lives!

We thought a worthy shot and it's took all the money we had to our names to get to the stage of applying for PR. Once you finish your course you get full working rights and Medicare (NHS equiv kinda) but still pay for kids fee's till we actually get a PR visa in passport.

You do not HAVE to have private health care, that is up to you. The only thing 'private' I have is ambulance cover at a cost of $24 a year. This year I have had quite a few health problems and I have had all the tests required very quickly...the maximum wait to see a specialist was two weeks.You may want 'Extra's health cover' which cover you for dental and optical among others...but like I said, it is up to you...it is NOT compulsory :)

Yeah I'm aware of 'extra' but we had the standard package.

My apologies for misleading you ;)...I meant it is not compulsory for permanent residents...unless it has changed and you have to have it for the first two years ? :)...I have lived in Oz for 36 years so I imagine many things have changed :confused:

Ahhhh, yeah this is for 'international' students in Oz.

To be honest after the cost of State schooling, the healthcare is nothing and to be honest a good deal. The package you get for roughly $700 I was told would cost a PR over $2,000.

Gov funding or sommit or other.

hello nearly qualified hairdresser will qulailfy in june i am doing my trainning hear in the uk it was much cheaper to do this two years nvq city and guilds.all i had to pay was for equipment,what im asking is that as i am at college and have worked inside the college salon can this be used as experience aswell i have been told that we should have a chance to apply after i get the 12months exp paid and our certificates just wanted to know if this will help ,i have no probs with sponsors as i have bro and sister and shortly my cousin is all set to go ,good new for hubby aswell as he has trained as a brickie all through college aswell so he be doing paid work exp also he main job is a truckie ,but still not on the skills list :fro:frown:
would like to hear from anyone or any advice

Sponsors will help with the points situation, but you need to get a positive assessment from the relevant assessing authority - the TRA for Hairdressers.

Now for study here in Oz they will want at least 900 hours work exp, but from the UK isn't it 4 years or something? ... :confused:

Hi all - thanks for all your replies i really apprieciate it.

When i spoke to GoMatilda they told me i had to be doing hairdressing for 20 hours a week for 18 months before applying - now this may have changed as it was a few months ago and they do tend to move the goal posts.

hello yes i spoke to go matilda aswell and asked about the various visa catergorys etc there is so many isnt there skilled sponsored working o.m.g the list goes on i know that your have to have your skills ascessed for tra ,then once that is done and if ok you can start the process so it will i guess it take a while but we are dertmined now,i just wondered if the time we work at college in there salon working with real customers would count towards experience, i do know that u have to work for 20hours a week paid aswell so fingers crossed,i think which ever way u go u have to have at least 12months or more experience
