Gunsmith = Armourer?? any clues
Hello folks,
Just want to know if anyone here knows what counts towards the Gunsmith Trade in Australia,
I'm an RAF armourer, servicing and repairing pistols rifles and machine guns.
Although there is hardly any work in Australia for gunsmiths, it's still 60 points and I'm a qualified Aircraft Maintenance Technician, so work will not be a problem.
Thanks for any help you can provide

Had a look for the Tra website, but it's moved :scared: perhaps someone can give us the new address/advice on contacting them. You can usually contact the skills assessment bodies for a breakdown of what they require for the different categories, then see if you can rejig your Cv to fit - emphasising what they require for the 60 points, playing down what is needed for 40! (Worked for us, under a different category)
Larissa
Hang on in there - also, try asking on the immigration board. Sometimes there aren't many replies over the weekend, particularly for specialist stuff. You could also ask Alan Collett at the Go Matilda website - www.gomatilda.com

> Thanks for the info, I used the site www.gomatilda.com and it's very good, as for the Gunsmith side of things, the new Trade list no longer lists Gunsmith.
I've had a few emails back from police forces in Australia, and they say it's a dying trade due to strict gun laws, and the use sworn police officers now.
Not a major problem, as my wife is a qualified Nursery person (60 points) But now I'm wondering if we can get enough work to sustain us, Here in the UK I'm a Weapons Technician in the RAF and earn just £24k but that trade doesnt seem to translate well out in Austrailia.
Thanks again for the info, I will do more job searching.....

Just thought I'd say hi as my hubby is an Aircraft Maintenence Engineer in the Navy. Have you done an apprenticeship as an Aircraft Maintenance Technician? If so can you not get the TRA to assess you on that qualification? From memory,you can be assessed in one trade on the SOL but have recent experience in another different trade on the SOL. Have you tried looking up the ASCO definition for Gunsmith - that will give you a better idea of whether to go down that route...

I checked for the ASCO definition but found nothing, except that it had been removed from the latest list.
Luckily my wife is a NurseryPerson (60 points somehow) and if I can figure out if I can work out there, we will go on her trade. Nursery Person full time gets £10,500 to £13,000 not enough for a family of 4.
Thanks for your help

Hi thanks for the info, yes I did a 4 year Mech Tech Scheme with the RAF, where I trained for 1 year, did 2 years on the job training, then trained another year on a further training engineering technician course to become an RAF Junior Technician. (very low rank )
