All of ours is done three monthly by an accountant.

Depends on the amount of work you are pulling in, many small subbies do their own GST. MYOB (I think) is just one computer program that will have you ending up with most of the info you need for statements if you plan to lodge it yourself.

It's easy to do yourself. Oh... but then again, I am an accountant

But seriously, it is quite easy. But it does depend on how well you keep your accounts. Some computer accounting systems produce a print out that you can copy onto the GST return. If you are the shoe box full of receipts person, then an accountant may well be called for

We do our own BAS statements[GST]. We do them monthly rather than 3 monthly or annually and send them electronically via the internet. We use a program downloaded from the ATO website called "e-record" It's a very simple program to use requiring only a small download after installation of the initial program to enable you to receive a digital certificate, this allows the use of email to correspond with the ATO. We also use the other parts of the same program for invoicing and bank reconciliation etc. Since setting up the business almost a 1 yr ago we've only had one month when the Ato owed us money this was paid into our account immediately so the system has worked well for us so far.
You do need to keep accurate records of any legitimate business expenses fuel, telephone and materials being our big 3.
You can register for an ABN by clicking the link in the text.
Good Luck
Welcome to the world of being an unpaid tax collecting service for the Govt.

I'm an IT contractor and also do it myself, monthly, using the ATO's e-record system.

Mind you, I only receive one cheque a month, so it's really straightforward.
