New mayors for Sydney, Brisbane
By Linda Silmalis and wires
March 28, 2004
INDEPENDENT MP Clover Moore is Sydney's new Lord Mayor after voters last night overwhelmingly rejected Labor's attempt to seize Town Hall while, in Brisbane, Liberal challenger Campbell Newman ousted Lord Mayor Tim Quinn in a nail-biter.
Ms Moore also looks to have won control of the 10-member council, with her team of independents likely to secure four other seats.
A senior ALP official said Labor had at least two positions and was hopeful of gaining a third, with the Greens and the Liberals possibly winning a seat each. The mayor has the casting vote on the council.
The Greens also celebrated a big increase in their vote elsewhere in Sydney, with candidates winning seats on inner-city councils at Marrickville, Leichhardt and Ashfield.
