I saw them in Woolworths yesterday at £10.98 a kilo! Maybe it would be cheaper to ship them from Devon :scared:

Hi

$4.99 a kilo in our local Woollies yesterday - might be a one-off though

If you live in Queesland you could grow your own banana's in your backyard,
then they don't cost anything.

Here in SA we're at about £9.99 a kilo - expensive enough still so have to ration my youngest son to 1 per shop as he loves them but at £1.00 a banana it does seem expensive!

Can't grow them down here but would if we could, just bought our own orange and lemon trees so we'll see how they go!

Only certain varieties and you have to get permission from the DPI. The grower I've been allocated to buy the plants from only sells ladyfinger and I have to go to Toowoomba to get them, once my permit has been granted.

My local fruit barn has never gone over the $7 a kilo mark since the cyclone - looked ok but I don't really eat them so still didn't buy them. No idea what they are at the moment.

Our neighbour has a couple of banana trees and no permit or licence. A work mate of hubby's has said he will get him a sapling to grow - again no mention of signing your life away for a banana How do they know?

I am guessing its ts probably all to do with disease, I know with the heat and lots of pests, banana crops can be devastated easily, there is a mould or fungus too. When you go up north and the qld border lots of warnings about moving bananas over borders etc. We have some rich old queensland grazier as one of our neighbours, must ask him, he loves nothing better than a good old waffle about queenslands laws

How do they know if you're hosing your garden with tap or tank water? They don't, but only one of them is legal. I think J is right, its to do with disease control.

Jane
p.s. bananas still $13 kilo at Coles today.

Will have to check it all out further before we get given a manky disease ridden tree Thanks for that. Refuse point blank to buy fruit and veg from Coles - all rubbish in my very humble opinion

Unfortunately I don't have much choice. The only other fruit store nearby has only the basics along with a cockroach or 50. The nearest Woolworths is even worse than Coles. I need to get my backside down to the Brisbane markets, but that means getting up early and I'm rubbish at that!
