Default GPS/SatNav from the UK

My Dad is wondering if his GPS or Sat/Nav will work in Australia and how he can upload the correct maps when he gets here?

What type has he got?

I have an Australian bought TomTom which obviouly came pre-loaded with AU/NZ maps. I think to download the Australian map to the device costs $150.

Yes it will work (it can still read the satellites etc), but he will need to buy the Oz maps.
Check out the manufacturers website where he should be able to buy them.

Or alternatively buy a brand new Aussy warranted, Aus mapped Tom Tom when you get here for $200.

The maps do look expensive.

Not really. IIRC Garmin wanted $275 for the Australian maps on SD card, you can buy a whole unit for considerably cheaper. I now have 3 identical Garmin untis for the UK, Aus and US and they cost me less than buying extra maps.

Garmin Nuvi 250UK/Europe - 99 pounds
Garmin Nuvi 250 US - US$119 (US maps were 75 pounds when the $ was 2:1)
Garmin Nuvi 250 Aus - $200

Crazy but I'm not going to pay more for maps when the units cost less, and Tomtom units broke 2x so I gave up on them.

Agreed, that is what I have found. The manufacturers are ripping us off Microsoft-style! I note that Garmin charge for the maps on sd media but not on cd-rom. The cd requires "unlocking" on receipt which may be a way for them to charge you.
