Got Visa, going to Melbourne, looking to make some friends.
My wife and I are in our mid thirties and just got our Visa's and are off to Melbourne, some time during August 2007. Were fairly self sufficient and will hopefully muddle through on rentals and settling in to, and finding jobs [Hey I'm nothing if not optimistic!]
Looking to maybe speak to a few others who are in the same boat as us [or not] and maybe try to make some friendships to try to pair through the initial discomfort of relocation etc.
I'm a bit of a geek, love the web, movies, games occasional snowboarding, star wars [I'm a self confessed big kid] and general socialising, my wife's a hairdresser, likes movies, and hair, nails, fashion and other such girlie thangs.
We had a great social life in Scotland and are just hoping to hook up with anyone that fancies more of the same and or sharing the burdens of moving etc.
Don't be afraid to say hello or get in touch.
[Unless your a kinda weird stalker, or looking to get us in to some cult religion-look elsewhere!]

Hi Stephen,
first of all welcome to BE,
Wherabouts in Melbourne are you looking to move to ?
There are quite a few Brits spread all over the Melbourne area. We ourselves are (hopefully) going out in July to somewhere around the Dandenongs/Ferntree guley area.
My wife has a nail studio here, so i'm sure they would have plenty to gas about. We are : me - 41 her - 43 and 2 lads 8 & 11.

ha ha. thanks but no thanks .
You just never know what kind of people are online...can be a strange place sometimes.
Were looking at initially getting a rental in the Carlton/Lygon street kind of area, seems lively and we really liked the atmosphere, and also the most social of city centre areas apart from some of the main CBDs.
I think my wife just made a life long friend already! She'll be in nail heaven.
this forum really is busy, very impressed. I'm gonna have to hang out here for sure.
Cheers!

Hey Stephen, welcome to the BE. There's a fair few Scots in Melbourne now.
We're heading there ourselves in August. We'r around the ame age as you, but have 2 little ones.
By the sound of things, good UK trained hairdressers are VERY busy in Melbourne .
Where about in Scotland are you from. We're currently near Falkirk, but previously in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Hi Stephen and Ms Stephen!
We are landing in Melbourne on 2nd August - not sure where we will settle. We have got a rental for 3 weeks near Frankston. We may also need a bit of moral support! We are about as far away from Scotland as you can get!! South Coast! I'm 40 (whispers!) OH 41! I am teacher (who needs hair and nails sorting!) - hubby copper in UK - going to work for government. We are beginning to get a bit nervous!

Hi Bexie! I think thats what we were looking for, at least if we know of someone thats doing this thing [that many friends and loved ones just cant understand why] then it aint such a hardship for us to bare. The nerves are perfectly natural, and I know they will pass. I'm already feeling so much better after just posting here today knowing that were not alone and many are in a similar situation. Let us know how you get on. Onward and upward!

Stephen, I think Bexie and I are going to be keeping each other going over the next few weeks, and it sounds like you're arriving around the same time so why don't you join us . We can all nibble our nails down to the quick and your wife and fix them for us .
Maybe we should all get together in August and toast each other making it to Melbourne?

No but seriously you will find that Frankston is a lovely place, albeit quite far from central Melbourne. For some reason it has the p*ss taken out of it by inner easterners, a bit like the way some people in and around London make fun of Essex. Frankston has all the shops and infrastructure you'll need at first, and depending on what takes your fancy you might stay or you might want to consider further out along the Mornington peninsula or closer in to Melbourne. Was in Mornington yesterday, it was lovely around there.

Can't resist this - If your hubbie's a copper I'm sure he'll have plenty of business in Frankston!!

Dya fancy a meet in Melbourne, mid - August - and anyone else brave enough for a blind meet! Think we may need the moral support and to share experiences etc!
