Goodbyes are about to start!!

My Mum and Stepdad fly in from Tenerife on 14th February to say their goodbyes to us. She phoned last night to confirm and Im dreading it already. Im not very good at saying goodbye to my Mum at the best of times. Keeping a stiff upper lip, is something I find impossible to do and will probably start to cry the minute I see her.

Any advice welcome to get me through this. Will put in a bulk order for tissues before she arrives!!!

Hi Jo,
We are about to do the same, and when I rang my Mum and Dad in Spain to let them know we would be leaving before they got back to U.K my Dads reply was that he would not leave his camper van. I was absolutely gobsmacked, they also have 2 grandkids aged 5/7. If this was not the biggest cop out on my Dads part I dont know what is. My Mum and Dad must be terrified of "loosing it" for them not to come home. So go for it, give your Mum and Dad the biggest cuddles ever, dont hold back the tears, and dont forget your going to see them again. Just wish I could do the same.

Maybe its your Dad's way of avoiding to say goodbye and the camper van is an excuse. In some ways I wish I didnt have to, it would be much easier for me, but then the kids need to see them, so kleenex to the ready!!!

Erm..that's what I thought. Sadly it wasn't to be. Trouble is with goodbyes, you just never know do you? :( Mind you, you could live down the road from loved ones and something could happen couldn't it?

The goodbyes are the worst bit. Be brave, stay focused, enjoy all the cuddles.xxx

I thought I would see both my parents again and it wasnt to be so if you can make sure you say your goodbyes but they are emotionally difficult.

Jo, I really feel for you. I have just been to visit my father today and the goodbye wasn't easy and I 'forgot' to hug him because we were all trying not to be emotional. Thankfully he was looking a lot better than usual as he has been extremely unwell. He is going into hospital within the next 6 months for a triple heart bypass. I almost said to my family I can't go. To help, I'm making sure I have money put aside to come and visit him and he said he will visit us after his operations. I'm in floods of tears as I say this. Wishing you the very best and if its any consolation many people have to go through this next part of the emotional rollercoaster and it's not easy.
On the positive side the internet and webcams and phone calls all help to keep in easy contact not forgetting a plane trip. :)

Re: Goodbyes are about to start!!

When I am seeing family/friends for the last time before we go I don't feel it is the last time as the whole reality of going has still not sunk in. It is just another day that we are seeing them, and enjoy it for that, with some Aussie questions thrown in.

I have not cried, and feel like I am being cold hearted when I drive away from crying rellies. However I realise that I have so much to look forward to and other things to think about (where to live, jobs, shippers, flights, etc) and the only element they have is that we are going.

Yesterday after saying 'see you later' to one sister, I felt empty seeing the other sister with part of me just wanting to go and part not wanting to leave them last night.

It is not nice seeing people you love being upset and you are the cause of it. On the other hand, if they were in our shoes they would go and I would not want to stop them.

My parents in a few days, then we have our 'open house' on Saturday for friends, shippers next week (that last bit just scare me)

All the best, it is not easy.
