I oild a very good Hyundai Xcel for $2.5k last year, so you can get decent cars within your budget.

How much do you know about cars? Because at that price you will not get a warranty, even from a used car yard, which lasts longer than a month and covers much at all, so you will need to know what you are buying.
Obvious checks are brakes (how does the pedal feel, does the handbrake hold the car), lights, wipers, shock absorbers (if you push the car down at each corner, does it come back up slowly or can you see it bouncing) and exhaust smoke. having a magnet in your pocket is a good idea - steel attracts a magnet, body filler doesn't!

You'll get a good Ford Falcon for that price. Just look for one with a decent service history... best place to go would be someone you know who has a reliable mechanics, the mechanic would probably have some contacts.
If you can get a mechanic to recommend one for you, that they service,, your onto a winner... as it's their word.
I've known my Mechanic for over 25 years now, and I put people onto him for cars... never been disappointed yet..
Last sale was an Immaculate Ford Fairlane 97 model, for 3.5 K.
