Although I haven't visited this place in 7 years, I vowed never to go back. It's a nice place, it actually seems like a restaurant, whereas a lot of Perth "restaurants" are bascially shops with chairs and tables, but....sorry mate, the food left a lot of room for impovement. Maybe it has improved, I certainly hope so.

There's a shop called Authentic India in Darch, it sells veggie indian food for take-away, two doors down is a kebab shop. Recently the son of the owner of Authentic India purchased the kebab shop, and has increased the menu options and offers curry's and naans etc.. The deco is still the same basic plastic table and chairs, as most people take away. Prices are reasonable, might be worth a visit?

Why don't expats just accept some things just won't the same as home?

Having said that I still defy why OZ/NZ likes Butter Chicken - no taste whatsoever!

Had a few nice takeaways from the Bengal Garden Tandoori, Belgravia Street, Cloverdale.
There is a restaurant there too but it is in the 'formica canteen style' again.
They do a jalfrezi, dansak and a vindaloo similar to the curries in the UK, by far the best I have had here.

err, can I ask why nobody on here has mentioned the best recognised Indian restaurant in Perth? The Indian cricket team eat there when on tour, as well as several top celebrities.

I can't believe there's even been 3 pages of discussion - complete no brainer.

Most poms would turn their noses up at real Indian food and write it off as not 'real Indian'.

True that The OP was asking for British Indian, not real Indian anyway.

True, as "Indian" food as we know it is more Pakistani/Bangladeshi food that has been altered to be cooked in a quick method. Most Asian people wouldn't eat British Indian restaurant food themselves, it has been developed for the British palate (who are normally the worse for wear on lager)

It's still lovely food though.

I've found some great Indian (takeaways) in Melbourne:

one on the main approach road, directly South of Hungtingdale Station- (100m walk) the other on the main approach, North of Hughesdale Station (several hundred meters walk).

As good as the YooKay.

I've noticed the 5 Rivers has gone right downhill recently.

Have you tried the Nepalese Curry House in Glengarry? It's a lot nicer than 5 Rivers now.

Naan bread was excellent, tandoori and kebabs were OK, but the curry was well below average.

The best we have found is Anghiti in Innaloo, but it's still not British style Indian. Surely, with the huge British population, you would have thought that somebody with the know how would have latched onto it by now.

We also tried the new one in Joondalup recently: "Sangeet". Again, it was OK, but nothing to make me want to rush back, and mega expensive.

Anyone have any knowledge of new places to try, they do seem to be cropping up everywhere now.
Best one we visited was Cinnamon on the Terrace in Victoria Park, when it first opened the Chef was from.......Birmingham, the owner's brother has a restaurant in Penang (opp. the Golden Sands Hotel) both are really good and we found as near to British style Indian curry in Perth, both North and South of the River. Plus the C.O.T.T is really nice inside and its in a nice vibey area of Victoria Park.

We went to the Punjab in Innaloo for the second time last night, and we enjoyed it again. Not quite British Indian but what is British indian? Pakora is very common in Scotland but many English people have never heard of it.

Can request chicken breast in your curry if you want and the rice and naan is excellent.

Would definitely return to the Punjab and the thali at Mela in Northbridge is also worth a try.

Hi Annie

It just goes to show we all have different tastes. We went to the Punjab last year after reading that it had been voted the best Indian in Perth (West Australian award).

We haven't been back. Tandoori stuff was good, in fact, I'd say it was very good. Both curries we ordered however were rubbish. We much prefer Anghiti next door.

It's a nice restaurant feel though, again, it isn't just a shop, like a lot of places. If it traded as a tandoori restaurant we may have returned, but I'm afraid we were extremely disappointed with the mains.
