Yes, not too bad compared to Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. Can genuinely live within walking distance to the beach and travel to Brisbane within a 15 min drive to train and 35 min train drive...rough guesses...and of course with the weather up here it can still feel like beach weather right through the year. Prices far more affordable than many other capital city beach areas around oz as well.

Thanks so much for all this feedback.
I think we have managed to narrow our search to the Cleveland area and the Bulimba/Hawthorne/Balmoral area. So edge of city versus coast..
So any more feedback on any of these places would be great as we will have to choose the area purely based on our research and will need to commit to a significant amount of time renting before we can explore and move on.
With the bulimba/Hawthorne area - are there any surrounding areas we should avoid ? A lot of rentals are coming up in morningside but no-one has mentioned that area to us....

Morningside is absolutely fine. If you can find a spot near the train station that will be convenient and also close to Bulimba. There is a chunk of Morningside to the north of Wynnum Road which you could probably consider the best bet in terms of location.

Just my personal preference but looking out a little bit further I'd probably not go as far as Cannon Hill or Murrarie...I don't think they have what you're looking for.

Yes south side preferably as we need to be accessible for a daily commute (by car) to Heathwood in the South....

We have been looking on property websites and Jindalee offers some impressive houses! I just wondered what the areas around it are like? 17 mile rocks, Sinnamon park....?

Do you play golf? McLeod golf club at Mt Omeney is women members only! Men can be 'Fellows' so your husband can play with you.

"ideally we are looking for a suburb that has a bit of life about it eg pubs, cafés, restaurants as well as parks and space for the kids."

Brisbane (Australian) suburbs are very quiet. I think it will come down to how much "pubs, cafés, restaurants" you want. Jindalee would shut up shop pretty early I imagine and be more focused on family shopping/sport than street life.

Coming from London my guess would be that Bulimba would be more suitable but hard to really know what you would consider busy enough. Even the busy suburbs here have plenty of parks, schools, family feel etc so you can live almost anywhere really.

You could also consider somewhere on the northside like Indooroopilly/Taringa/Toowong and send your hubby over the walter taylor bridge against peak hour traffic to Heathwood.
