Re: Goldcoast vs Sunshine Coast
I would definitely suggest Sunshine Coast. Much more family friendly. Gold Coast has a lot of high rise apartment living and it's a bit in the doldrums.
(which means if you are buying it will be cheaper but there is not much soul to the place) Also, it is not a long drive to visit all the "Worlds" (i.e. Sea World etc) from the Sunshine Coast.

Yes take your point about it being very big area and Surfers is more high rise. My mum moved there from UK and wasn't very happy and she ended up on mid north coast NSW and is much happier - so I guess my view is a bit tainted.

Well coldbeer you've got the better climate that's for sure! As for going out at night ... there are so many areas of Sydney to be avoided after dark it is a shame.

I agree, it's totally soulless and I'm guaranteed to be in the doldrums when a kangaroo hops over my 26th floor balcony.

I can understand you not wanting to live in a city but we love living in Brisbane as it means we have so many choices on what to do. There is always something to do in the city and you have gorgeous beaches an hours drive away in either direction. We are working during the week and it's a perfect location for going either direction and we either head for city or coast at the weekend. We are only 10-15 mins on the train or bus to the city (Newmarket) and I cannot believe the number of parks nearby and we also have a fantastic public swimming pool on our doorstep.
I love the both the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast - personally I like Sunshine Coast better as it isn't as developed but think that we have best of both worlds in location.

Having spend a lot of time in both areas I would say the Gold Coast is Blackpool and the Sunshine Coast isn't.

When you say a lot, how long exactly and did you manage to get out of Surfers? Not that Surfers is anything like Blackpool, well not the Blackpool I remember anyway.

Brisbane is a fabulous city...we love it, always plenty to do and things going on.
Not really spent much time on the sunny coast but from what little time we have it has an older feel to it (if you know what I mean) where as the goldy is much more vibrant......we are lucky enough to be around 30 mins away from the beach so our choices at weekend are plenty.....have a great day in the city or a great day on the beach.

For me its more like Marmite, love it or hate it. Having lived on the Gold Coast for a total of 5 years, (with a gap of 15 years in the middle), I love it, apart from Surfers Paradise, which isn't Blackpool, but its probably the closest you'll find to it in Australia.
