Tens of thousands do arrive every year, its an australain tradition to finish high school and go on a drunken binge of shagging and drugs for a week. Honest enough Its got a bad reputation because of smashed up accom, drag racing, drug overdoses, brawls, street scenes getting out of control, normal people just avoid schoolies week, predators and trouble makers head in to stir things up.
Gold coast is situated just above the border of NSW so it gets qld and nsw kids hence the high numbers, usually riot police and every spare cop arrive to keep it under control. Drink spiking test kits were handed out supposidly this year. When my son left school 2 years ago they were given an information kit containing condoms, advice on STD's and drug info.
Wild week and yes it does happen
