Giving my opinion of a place in Australia makes me an 'expert'? No need to be so overly sensitive and start throwing smart arse sarcastic remarks around. I've been there and stayed there a few times with friends who live there but I couldn't wait to get out of there each time. Not my type of place to live at but if its yours good on you, I have no sarcastic remarks to throw back even if I don't agree with your views because its yours not mine.

Its your opinion and you are entitled to it, the OP asked what it is like to 'live' so really you are generalising quite a lot ! The Gold Coast is a huge place, there are no high rises outside the beachfronts, schoolies lasts 3 weeks not bad out of 52. Buildings cramped together ? Some of the acreage doesnt have that feeling ? It is a relaxing place with peace and quiet, if you choose the right area.

I remember asking the same question when I was looking to come out here, until you are here and get a 'feel' for a place you really cannot really tell if its going to be what you want.

If you dont actually 'live' here how can you really give an honest opinion about a place ?, I have been to lots of places but never lived there I would by telling you about a holiday destination not a home . I guess the OP wanted to know how people that lived here felt, which was the reason for Steve O's comment.

Yes you are more than entitled to your opinion, however I would want geniune information from residents rather than hearsay from holidaymakers.

Surfers Paradise is not the Gold Coast the Gold Coast is much bigger than that.

Still these 33 degree winters on the Gold Coast are awesome !!

Do you realise you are going to get the 'Gold Coast Massive' on your case saying un-qualified remarks llike that!!!

Very Well put.....a lot of people on this MB have nothing but negatives to say about the GC. which is unfortunate, because like you say if you bypass Surfers, its an awesome place.

Agreed, the GC rocks. Amazing countryside, varied views, busy if you like it but masses of quiet places too. I personally really like Surfers for a day out too, though for some reason lots of people advise people to bypass it. Its good to have a choice. Touristy places like surfers or the quieter country areas. We camped in Canungra at the weekend, idyllic.

I live on the GC, moved to bayside Brisbane, then we moved back to the GC again and must say we have settled back here very very well. Its true, there is indeed so much more to the GC than Surfers! In fact, personally Surfers is one of the places to avoid when you live here, we do!

We love that we have world class beaches on our doorstep, plenty of shops to choose from, right on the NSW border so easy access to some absolutely amazing Northern Rivers NSW areas....great airport with easy access, fantastic parks and the hinterland on our doorstep. We love it here and can never imagine moving again. The kids, 13 & 15, love it.

The only negative things we can think of is the BAD driving...which we think is all over Qld, not just the GC, and the money hungry GC Council! Apart from that..its all good, at least for us.

We love the SC as well, but for us its a little too quiet to live but is the best place to visit, has some amazing beaches! We think Qld in general has it all over the other Aussie states...

i'm biased i live in caloundra, choice over the gold coast and brissie. we have two young kids so for our family life cant beat caloundra - surrounded by beaches and all the amenities that we need - and yes there are op shops and the like on our main street - bulcock street - but guys, have u been there lately? theres designer clothes, arts, homeware shops springing up all ove the place - yes i was shocked too!

HOWEVER when i want to get my city fix i go to brissie, and when i want a 'getaway' i go to the goldie, well sort of - royal pines resort to be exact, beautiful surrounds and base for days out...and 10 mins from broadbeach/jupiters casino/surfers - what more could u want, except that i agree that the only thing missing from surfers are the kiss-me-quick hats. you like skeggy, you'll love surfers

RObina seemed to be the area that sprang out at us on the GC but property is poorer value for money there due to demand. However, the amenities and cycle tracks etc. really appealed. Now looking at property available on the SC and researching more about Caloundra, we are torn. Caloundra has beaches, reasonable property prices but sounds like it has less amenities? I know that onve upon a time the construction industry was booming on the SC and would hope eventually things may work towards that direction again. I am also unsure of the weather diferences between the SC and GC. I read in one post there is very little but in another that the sunshine coast is very humid and wetter due to be further north?

We currently live in the sea side town, Skegness and I like the holiday feel and all the entertainment for kids that this brings about eg. paddling pools, crazy golf, play areas, boating lakes etc, etc.

We will travel all over both regions when we arrive in November as we are planning to take a break when we first arrive (fingers tightly crossed for the visa and as hubby is a plasterer, time of year and economy, we are well aware that the break may have to be longer) but its nice to hear other peoples views and experiences.

Hey Joey

We are in Little Mountain.

I love Caloundra and never get sick of the feeling you get when you are driving towards Caloundra and can view the sea in the distance Makes it all seem worth while moving here. Our kids go to meridan and love it there. Have you been here long? We tried the goldie and liked it there but could never get Caloundra out of our heads.

Why is it some people who comment about the GC have only ever seen Surfers Paradise on a 2 week holiday and then slag it off!!! they have never seen the real Gold Coast or experienced what it's like to really live here, we have been here almost 6 years and it has everything you could imagine from the hussle bussle places to the really quiet, we might be biased but we really love it, I couldn't imagine bringing my kids up anywhere else! we have theme parks and beaches and playparks and loads of council run free days, shopping centres galore, mountains, whatever takes your fancy it's here and to wake up on a winters morning with the sun shining and a glorious 27+ degrees, well it sure is my paradise, I don't care what anyone else says.............

Hi.. i also chuckle to myself about people slagging off the gold coast, when a lot of them usually visit Surfers or stay within a 2km radius, except venturing out to the theme parks. We are in Robina, ticks all our boxes.. shops, mountains and beaches within 10 to 20 min drive.. wineries, northern beaches, theme parks, glitz of surfers and all the restaurants and casino..
Lots of opportunities for the youngsters to get jobs and earn their own money.. couldn't ask for more.. Ok except a lotto win

Oh dear someone else who wants to leave a bad impression of the GC...I feel sorry for anyone wanting to find out on BExps what life is like on the GC!! The Gold Coast is certainly unique in Australia and is often mis-represented on BExps!!! Its not by any means all like Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach, and thats why it is so appealing and why its the fastest growing part of Australia. People move here from all over the world for the varied lifestyle, outdoor life and proximity to everything. You can live in the countryside (like we do) and feed the birds by hand and have wallabies in your garden and then be inside a beautiful new shopping centre like Robina in 10-15 minutes. You can visit miles and miles of beautiful beaches and go fishing or sailing, then have breakfast at one of the surf clubs and go bushwalking and find real peace in the beautiful hinterland and national parks.

We live in Mudgeeraba, near Robina and this has recently been voted the friendliest town in SE QLD, and has an olde world villagey feel. Theres a huge range of sporting facilities, parks and more green than you would imagine. Life here is definitely NOT all cramped, high rise, etc etc. Robina is building its first high rise but I would challenge anyone to find a better shopping experience than Robina with its beautiful shops and lakeside restaurants at the moment. If you want to live in the quieter areas have a look at places like Mudgeeraba, Currumbin Valley, Tallebudgera, Bonogin, Tallai and Worongary. People who live in these areas often live on large blocks and in acreage properties so to say its all high rise, cramped etc is not true. House prices are inflated compared to cheaper areas in Australia such as Adelaide but you still get a lot more for your money than you would in the UK.

As a small migration agent (ex UK) who lives and works on the GC I find the GC is what many British families and others are looking for when they think of 'a new life in Australia'. It may not suit everyone but this is home to many happy British families and others who move here all the time from interstate and overseas and I certainly consider myself very privileged to live and work here.

We live on the Sunshine Coast and it's always amazed me that the parochial attitude of the SC locals is very dismissive and quite arrogant when you mention the GC. To be quite frank, they think it's a dump.

The 'we are not the GC' is a line that you hear many a time on local blogs discussing various issues, mostly about trying to bring the SC into the 21st Century by having an even half decent public transport system (no train lines and few buses), job diversity and creation (dominated by tourism and an ailing construction industry) and development.

I get the impression that many SC locals or residents of say 15 years + really resent the 'blow ins' from not only other countries but also from within Australia. For instance, I'm always surprised to read Victorians described as 'Southern Migrants' when moving within their own country. It like the SC is now independent from the rest of Australia.

The SC is beautiful but the attitude of many here is not - just read the blogs on the Sunshine Coast Daily if you don't believe me.
