So assuming the risk factor financially was acceptable that you don't get a visa grant and are forced to return to the UK, you would basically be here on a tourist visa which is for a max of 6 months (3 for an ETA which you then extend).

Unable to work at all for up to year on your tourist visa, having to leave the country to renew a visa at least once and again having to leave again to be offshore and have your visa put in your passport at an Australian embassy makes that, if nothing else, hideously expensive travel wise. You cannot be in the country when your visa grant happens (for most visa types).

I know somebody who did it with about 2 months left to run in the guestimate on how long visa processing would take and had to go to NZ and get the visa put into the passport there.

At this stage, it would just be unacceptably expensive to me and too bigger risk for impatience if I had a family to worry about.

Not to mention immigration not allowing them in on a tourist visa in the first place. A tourist visa is intended for just that...tourists. It's not meant as a long term waiting out your permanent visa.

On the bright side when we and many others on this board applied for visas, the processing time was about 18 months not to mention the skills assessment and all the other things which basically meant 2+ years to get it.

Nowadays its streamlined and quick by comparison.

Hang in there. We're all been there. Just waiting...and waiting....
