Hi I emigrated in September 2006 with my wife. Things didnt work out and I discovered that my wife was cheating. Came back by myself in June this year on the verge of a breakdown with nothing.
After Nearly 4 months of staying at home with my parents i've found it really tough to find work and settle back here. I've managed to get my flight money (1 way) and a grand to keep me while I find work. Im going to stay in brisbane in a backpackers and will try to find IT work - however my visa allows me to work as anything so any Job I can get will do to get me up and running again.
ANy thoughts welcome. How easy is it to get a job in the City (Casual Bar work, shop work etc..) Any thoughts on cheap accommodation or ways of finding shared accommodation welcome.

Ideally I planned on getting more money behind me - But living at my parents and lack of work here just make me want to go back over even more. I've found it really depressing and being 37 next week I really need to be enjoying life again.

Is this bravery or stupidity ? Thoughts welcome!
My Parents think im mad and want me to go to the doctors and get antidepressants - Its 20 years since I lived at home and they seem to have the authority of throwing a wet blanket on any dreams or ambition I may have.

wish I was as motivated as you , we came bk last year also,, and want to return asap, but daughter just started A levels, so unfortunately have to wait.

This! Follow your dreams mate and you wont go wrong.

On the work front, try further up Queensland. Tourism by the reef is massive and a city like Cairns is growing rapidly, and hence requires more of a workforce to sustain its growth. Just a thought but dont think one dimensionally and look at the major cities.

A massive well done for picking yourself up and moving on with your life - it can't be easy. It would however be so easy to listen to your mum and dad, and I too suspect their motives of perhaps wanting you to stay home with them (completely natural) but it's your life and, as regularly gets trotted out,(usually by me!) this isn't a rehearsal and you only get one chance.

At least on a forum such as this, you are with like-minded people who are thinking about/have applied/have moved to Oz. Easy for everyone to say I guess but I do really think you should go for it.

You sound like you have the right frame of mind to get where you want to go.

What line of work would you like to do ?.....if you can do something you enjoy will make lots of things easier.

Thanks for all the positives - I think my message might have gotten through to my parents they actually were constructive and talked about it in brief tonight without having a go at me, "You know son - your going to have to grow up sometime - comical haha never!)

Ok, now for some not so chipper "go for it" advice. Bear in mind you are not eligible for Centrelink benefits for 2 years, so if/when you run out of money you're on your own.

Take a read of some posts by those who have come here and found a struggle to get work of any sort. My husband for one. He's an electronic engineer who couldn't get work in his field (very specialised area) in Adelaide so tried the old "anything" to tide us over until he got work. The local petrol station wouldn't hire him because he was too qualified and they thought he would leave as soon as something better came along. True, but they still said no. The local pub said no because he didn't have a Smart Serve certificate. It took a very long time for him to get any work, which meant no pay cheque for him and no social services available. Thankfully I worked 2 jobs so was able to support us, but if I weren't working we would have used our savings that much sooner.

Not sure if you are saying you have $1000 or 1000GBP, but either way it's not very much money to get you started in a new country. Even a backpackers is going to cost a chunk of that, then add in your food, transportation, etc.

I really think that if you have time left on your visa it would be wise to stay put for the time being, get a "anything to tide you over" type job where you are - bar work etc. - and save some serious money first before coming over. If you are living with your parents then at least you have the safety net of them should things not go to plan.
