If you are coming to Australia alone you may be have enough to think about without worrying about your dog. If you're out and about meeting new friends and sorting out a new life for yourself, maybe bringing wuff isn't such a good idea. At a time when your dog is in strange surroundings and needs your attention, you may not be around much for him. Do you have family who would keep him when you emigrate ?

the paperwork which is really giving me a headache is the import/export permits, not to mention the costs, have emailed the company for clarification on what service they provide

When they're in quarantine are we allowed to give them toys bought in Australia?

Yes they can have toys and indeed I would bring in many! We also brought our own food as one of them has a delicate stomach if he doesn't eat the stuff we find works for him.

That's good to know then. Each cat has their own favourite type of toy so it will be great being able to take small tunnels and ping pong balls as soon as they arrive in quarantine. Are we allowed to interact with the cats whilst they're in quaratine?

Yes you can make an appointment to see the cats, although visiting hours are not helpful to most workers. We went into their err "pen" and the cats were also let out into a bigger store room for a bit of a run around with us supervising as nobody else was around the day we went. My husband went for a couple of days after they first arrived as he wasn't working and then we both went at the midway point.

this may have been your experience, but as i said, here on the gold coast, 2 of our friends were unable to secure decent rentals as quick as they hoped because of their animals. Perhaps its different where you are, but its not intended to be a scare story..

Perhaps it was your friends. Seriously I was terrified before we moved because of stories like the one you told and am just trying to provide balance to people that are worried enough about the big move. And I was house hunting around Sydney, which I assume is not a particularly unusual location.

Hi, we brought our dog out here last September and although I did worry we were bringing him for us and not what was best for him I was concerned that he would struggle with the journey (wasnt worried about quarantine as he has been going to kennels since he was a puppy) and sometimes felt guilty at the thought of dragging him across the world and that we wouldnt get a rental very easy but he is absolutely fine and loves it here, now when I look at him enjoying his life still with us I am so glad we have brought him, we also managed to find a rental fine but we did bring a pet reference with us and that really helped. On the socialising side it is a great way to meet people while you are walking the dog, I meet people regularly to take the dog for his walk which is great, you can also get dog walkers or could consider daycare in boarding kennels while you are at work.

where do you get a pet reference from? the Kennels?

We have two dogs english springer and a cocker spaniel. We are bringing the english springer but not the cocker as she has cancer so we don't really know how long she has got, shes' only 5 (it's not effecting her health or wellbeing, yet)! We have made arrangements for her to go to a friend who has a lot of land and dogs of whom our dog socialises with, so when we leave her (if she is still with us) she will go to a fantastic home, one of which she knows so that eases the pain of leaving her a bit.
We just got the results of the rabies test last week so we are on count down for that now. I think the jab and blood tests where about £150 all in. we are also getting a company to do all the paperwork and shipping for us. It's gonna cost about £3500 including quarantine.
