Default Giving Blood - No can do...

I only found this out today - If you have lived in the UK for more than 6 months between 1980 and 1996 then you are ineligible to give blood in Australia EVER!

I guess maybe it wont effect many people, but I always liked to give blood, as I have the super rare group, and kind of felt obliged to help keep the stocks up.

I guess it's because of the BSE business etc. Shame though.

I agree ... it is a shame especially if your groups rare like yours. Mine doesn't matter so much A+ ... common as muck

Several threads in the past on "blood transfusions" - if you are interested, search on those terms, as some of the discussions have been very good.

This applies in many countries...not just Australia.

You ought to be worried about whats in your polluted pommie blood rather than the fact Aussies dont want it.

Nice. I'll bear that in mind when I get run over next Thanks for your comments - I'll have a look at the previous threads.

I'm not sure why I feel so bothered by it - It just makes me feel like a slightly less useful member of society I guess. Though given that it's me, I guess it's not that hard

I'm sure if something major happened (hopefully it never will) and blood stocks got so low they would probably request our contaminated blood than have nothing at all and let lots of people die. Well its just my theory.... perhaps they will let everyone die??

We get all these guilt-inducing emails at work exhorting us to give blood and telling us we are useless if we don't. I rang the woman one day and said that I found it offensive that she was asking people to help "their fellow Australians" - what about the rest of us - and asking if she knew how many people COULDN'T donate blood. She was amazed, having had no idea at all, and apologised profusely! Didn't stop her sending the same email a few weeks later though

If anyone actually knows why I would love to know......not that I participate in that particular sport as I have ermm....no veins.....takes about an hour to even find one to get an injection into let alone get anything out.....but being that we think we are so civilised, love to know what lurgy we have.

Does that mean I won't be able to get a date in Oz....jeepers
