Getting to Oz, but something different on the way?

Olu,

I am going to live in Australia, i am leaving the UK around the end of September this year, i ain't coming back here, (UK), well i have a loved one here, so maybe one trip, but for me, its gonna work, come hell or cold water it will work for me. If it does not, my disappointment in my ability to make it work will send me down the same route as my name sake.:(

What i want to ask all you experienced people, i am in no rush to get there, aslong as i arrive by the end of October, i am happy. Can you please suggest some interesting things to do on the way, routes, stopovers etc etc.

Cost is an issue, but you only live once, and so far, it has NOT been without a fair bit of lets say "Not the norm"!:)

Cheers forever, lots of luv Keith.

Depends where you have been before. But the main stopovers are:

Dubai
Singapore
Malaysia
Thailand
Japan

But you could also do

South Africa
America/Hawaii (Honolulu does direct flights into Sydney.

If you can come up with your main stopover there are domestic flights you can take to loads of interesting places.

Re: Getting to Oz, but something different on the way?

Well the first time we moved to Oz, 20 years ago now, we did it backpacker style, flew to India, spend too little time there, then flew to Hong Kong, then flew to Bangkok, overland via Koh Samui (before they built the airport and ruined the place) and Singapore to Bali, then to Sydney. Did it whistlestop fashion to be honest, I think we took about six weeks and could easily have taken months but I had a job to get to.

If I was doing it again, what I would do would depend on whether I expected to get the opportunity to see those area/countries again. Fit in as much as you can if you don't think you will or take a more leisurely/in-depth trip if you will have the chance to see more of the world over the coming years.

If you have an open mind, it will great whatever you do :D. Good luck and enjoy!

Do it overland. If you're on your own it would be a great way to get down here.

Hi Keith,

My husband and I are thinking of doing the exact same thing. We first looked into the Trans Mongolian Train from Moscow to Beijing and then heading off from there. Now, because of cost, we're thinking of flying into Beijing and heading down to Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia and Sinapore. We found a really cheap flight of £310 from KL to Melbourne at the beginning of November. Plus a flight to Beijing for about £600 Mid-Sept. Those flights together are probably cheaper than one flight to Oz and think of the experience/adventure along the way!

Good luck. Keep us informed of your plans as we want to do that same thing around the same time, so would be great to hear of your plans.

Louise

Was it the Oz Bus you went with? I loved the look of that. Sorry to hear the tour operators were not good, but hopefully that didn't spoil your experience.

Yes it was OzBus.....fortunately no it didn't. We had an amazing time - it was definately the people that made it both our OzBus family and the locals along the way.

Thanks for all the replies, do not know what to do? Heads in a whuzzz!

What do you all think, i reckon i am going to fly all the way, but do not know whether to stop over, and for how long, and where to etc????

Manchester to Brisbane with Emirates, straight through, ouch!

Stanstead to Kula Lumpa, then onto Gold Coast, stay over in Kula Lumpa for one or two nights?

Fly to say, somewhere, a holiday place, Thailand, Bali, Marituass, you know somewhere to get Miss Moon in the mood? Stay for a week, then fly onto to Oz?

Or do a round the world ticket, three destinations, all for say three days or so, then onto Oz?

Anyone got some good tales! Cheers.
