Getting out money from British account in Aus
We bought a car yesterday and have to pay for it today. We haven't yet got an aussie bank account, assuming we'd draw out the cash here from my card (I'm with First Direct in the UK) until we got bank accounts sorted.
It's worked so far, but the car needs several thousand bucks... Can I go to the counter in a bank and ask them to give me that cash from my british account? Presumably with a fee?
Any ideas?

Yes, I do have telephone and internet banking... I've just opened a Westpac account online so that's done, but it will take a couple of days apparently.
I just want to go get the cash over the counter...
I wonder if I could just go to HSBC and get it, seeing as I'm an HSBC customer in the UK.

Ha ha Biggy ... All the way to HSBC in Paramatta only to be told that we have been misinformed and there's no way we can do it.
So, will wait for a couple of days, get Westpac open and transfer money via HIFX or something.
Car man happy to wait, not surprisingly.
There has to be these weird difficulties along the way ... things we take for granted in the uk aren't that easy here, but that's ok. Life's rich tapestry etc.

Hi Rach. Thanks! Sheesh, I really must get my act together. Just got over the jetlag this morning though, thank god. Getting up at 5am every day hasn't been doing me many favours.
