Default getting jobs in Oz

What did you people do before you arrived in Oz.

Did you get in touch with employment agencies?

If so, were they very receptive or was it jsut a case of we`ll see you if you get here?

Are emplyment agencies worth contacting and do they charge much?

Basically any tips on getting some leads before you arrive.

Matt and I are moving to Brisbane in April. He's sent out some cold call emails and letters to relevant companies, and he's got about a 20% response, even if it was just to say no. He has been steered in the direction of vacancies. So I think it's worth putting the feelers out before you go. I'm going to start job hunting this week, I think. Good luck

I did wonder myself if it was worth making contacts with perspective employers before we moved to Oz?

Think it will depend a lot on the type of job/industry you are in

One aspect of employment that is worth considering is that there is a strong focus on younger people which high qualifications and years of experience, however this mix is not possible to achieve as the younger (by the way I am older) have generally not had the experience. So for the older over 40's with the experience and quali's, you have to be young or look young and you are in. The image thing is really important here, 'young and vibrant' with 'years of experience'.

Mind you to much experience has the employers worried also, there is the worry about showing others up. It seems that there is a lack of 'maturity' in many organisations and egos are easily bruised here. So if you bear all this in mind when you run the gauntlet of interviews then you are away laughing.

On the whole I found the agencies preferred to wait until you get here. I suspect that this would depend on what your skillset was (i.e. If there is a shortage they would be interested)

I actually got my first job from an email I sent while in the UK. I sent several emails to companies who were in my area (Retail software) I sent the email in July and got a response in November (We arrived late October). On the whole I found companies were more interested if you had a definite arrival date.

Thanks for the replies.

To be honest I don`t have a clue as to what I could do in Perth, as the industry I`m in here (digital tv broadcasting) doesn`t really exist in Perth (it`s all transmitted from Sydney, except for local news).... so my 10 years of experience in this is a dead-end. My only hope is to find a job where I could transfer my computer operator skills across (ie I`m good at using software). Closest thing to what I do atm I think would be Burswood Casino security monitoring.

See you in McDonalds

Chubb and places like that do security monitoring, and with the 24 hours shifts that go with jobs like this, you would probably be over the average wage of 50,000 bucks. Unfortunenatly Australia, is rather neoptistic in my view when it comes to obtaining jobs, where an off the cuff remark, at a bbq or in a pub, amongst freinds and aquaintaces can net the best results. So It's important in my view to get in and mix with the locals, as soon as you can.

Best of luck

Cheers Leedslad, that could be an idea. I`m heavily into Photoshop, Premiere and stuff. Haven`t played with After Effects yet but would love to. Also any web-design stuff I`m a bit of an addict.....

I`m used to 12 hour day and night shifts... standard in the role I`m in here.
