Getting a job - appearance
 

I have passed my RPL and the next step is to apply for Visa's
:cool:

Anyway - one question I have is how important is appearance to potential employers over there?

I currently work in the IT industry and would obviously continue to do so over there. However, my appearance is not that normally accepted with that of an office job in the UK (i.e. I have long hair!)

Appearance in the UK seems to be less important in the UK now compared to a few years ago - what's the situation in Auz?

Hiya

I have always working in an office doing bookkeeping and have always been lucky enough to wear jeans and trainers to work, now I am here (Melb), working in a paintshop office, and I have to look smart even though we work with tradesmen and no one frequents the office... so I would say long hair is not a problem, but you would prolly have to be smart in appearance...

Good luck.. and if you are going to go through an agency, they will point you in the right direction, dont feel stupid for asking, it is a new environment after all :)

Always dress smartly for an interview.
You can adapt to whatever the office dress culture is after you've
been hired.

What's the score with office dress in places like Brisbane ?

If its so hot and humid
Can you wear shorts with a shirt and tie?

HAHAHAH sorry but the thought that went thru my mind is one that was planted there a couple of days ago... a mate of mine live din Qld for a while and the tourists would go to the beach in their shorts and the like and the next day would wake up with polka dot legs where they have been peed on by a fly (cant rem the name of it) the pee irritates the skin and you scratch it.. spose it is something like a mossie bits... sorry could not resist it :)

You would probably find that in an office you might like to wear
something warmer because it's cold due to the air-conditioning. You
might have to put your jacket or jumper on while at work, and take it
off before going out to lunch.

I think it's a myth that most Australian offices are 'cold' due to the
air-conditioning. Most buildings have air-conditioning, but the
quality of airconditioning in many of these is very bad, although that
does depend on your personal preference.
