Like other would-be migrants, I want to settle near to good local schools, shops, leisure centres, etc. whilst avoiding the non-desirable areas, and it's difficult to imagine what any of these suburbs are like. When we do eventually land in Oz in the summer, we can't really afford to waste too much time driving around everywhere, and of course the kids in the back will get really bored!

So I've bought myself two UBD road atlasses, one for Perth, the other for the rest of WA, and at least now I can relate to these areas, and write little notes down, hopefully narrowing down our preferred areas a bit before we arrive.

I ordered the books from the amazon website http://www.amazon.co.uk, it was really easy to do, and my parcel was delivered 2 days later! Each book cost about Â£11 with p&p added. If anyone else heading for Western Australia would like to do the same, here are the book numbers you will need:

Western Australia (Country cities and towns) street directory
ISBN: 0-7319-1184-9
Perth 2002 street directory ISBN: 0-7319-1332-9

If you're heading for any of the other states, do a search on amazon, because they do stock these too. Hope this info helps.

The penguin road atlas is very good for major road travel. Check out auslig.com.au
for more remote and small-scale maps (you can even get the whole country on CD-ROM);
the Map Shop in Peel Street, Adelaide (near the Rundle St. Mall) is superb and has
everything you will possibly want. Dymocks is a good bet in any other medium to large
sized centre, as is Angus & Robertson.

I think you will find that it is much cheaper to buy these books once you are here,
and you don't have to carry them on the plane with you!

If you are looking for a suburb to live in,I would suggest www.domain.com.au It is a
real estate site which gives you an idea of the demographics of each area, income
