We would live permanently in Newtown or West Geelong. Torquay and other towns are lovely, but we did comment to each other when we were there on Sunday that if it was quite busy on a windy winter day, it must get rammed in the summer! Not to mention the traffic....... It would also add considerably to a commute to Melbourne. No train service - just Geelong. |
Re: Geelong
Oh, and are you asking about Brits because you want a big Brit community or because, like us, you don't want to?!! ;-)
|
Re: Geelong
I will be honest, being Scottish myself I would like to mix more with people from Britain.
Im not saying I dont mix with Australians, I do, really well actually, so far but I do miss mixing with people I can relate to and who have the same sence of humour as me. It may sound silly but it would be a vital part of whether or not I can settle permanently here. |

Re: Geelong
Ive been told there is a Scottish pub in Geelong. Have you every been to it, is it any good?
My hubby is a big football fan and longs for a pub to go and watch the footy in. I think thats the only thing he misses!!! |
Re: Geelong
I was out to see a band on Satruday in Geelong and didn't notice the Scottish pub saying that by the end I didn't notice much of anything:beer::beer:
Depending on who he follows he can most probably see the games via the official club website since he is out of the UK. I will ask around about the Scottish pub. |
Re: Geelong
Thanks for that.
We have Setanta, and he watches the games on that but he misses that interaction with his mates and of course the 'banter' ....... and the drinking!!!!!!:p |
Re: Geelong
There is a pub near us in the town centre CALLED The Scottish Chiefs but I doubt it is frequented by lots of Scots!! It has live music each week and is meant to be quite good.
I don't get about the sense of humour thing - I get on well with Aussies and haven't noticed a difference, mind you, I was brought up in a country with a big Expat community so I guess it's all I've known. I have met quite a few Brits here, mainly at play parks and mainly English. They always seem less inclined to talk than Aussie Mums. I am half Welsh so I can talk the hind legs off a donkey (as this post proves!). |

Re: Geelong
Dont get me wrong Ive been out with the work a number of times, there all Aussies and Ive had a great time but they dont have the same humour as us Scots and I miss that. I miss the familiarity of having a laugh with people who are the same as me. Its probably us and not them. We are unique after all!!! (haha)
And before someone says it.............no I wont go back to Scotland !! But I do know a few families that have left Australia for just that reason which I think is a shame. If I were to leave it would be because of the supermarkets!!:D |

I have the pleasure of working in Geelong at the Shell refinery in Corio. The Corio and Norlane areas aren't my cup of tea at all although cheap housing is available in these areas but with good reason. As I didn't want to travel from Melbourne every day I decided that we would be best living close by and chose Torquay. I love Torquay as do the wife and kids its friendly and has plenty nice places to eat and drink with the added bonus of some stunning beaches. There are many great seaside towns on the Bellarine with the most notable being Queenscliff and Oceangrove I would happily live in both of these before Geelong. As has been mentioned Geelong has some nice areas the pick of the bunch being Highton, Newtown and some areas of the centre. Overall I wouldn't live in Geelong its not horrendous but its just not that nice either and with so many great places on its doorstep you have plenty alternatives to choose from.
Sorry Geelong that’s how I feel about you! The missus and I both stated that if we moved to that area then we would love to aim for Torquay. Unfortunately the winters are too cold ie as in we dont want one anymore. We noticed alot of houses there with alot of land for cheap. We looked at one which was a farm with 10 acres, a riding school and a seperate bugalow near the beach for $700,000. Is there a large land tax at all?? |

The average 3 bed house is about $470,000 or you could build from scratch for $420,00.
We are currently renting as we are on a 457 but if we eventually get the PR visa that we want then building looks to be our best option. Torquay is nice but also consider other towns on the Bellarine as summer and easter in Torquay are a tad busy. This bothers many locals as the cafes and supermarkets are rammed. Easter didn't bother me too much but I have yet to experience a full summer season.....the jury is still out. |
Re: Geelong
Im going down next month so dont think it will be too bad as there are no festival events in October..........I hope !
