Gday everyone,

Im currently living in Perth West Aust and I want to move to the UK to try and get work in the IT industry. I am currently working as a computer technician for a big perth retailer http://www.austin.net.au but of course the money isnt flash and Im up for some adventure. Does anyone know if there is many positions available in the UK, Im thinkin of getting my CCNA soon. Also what sort of money would I be looking at??
any advice would be great

I am moving to Perth sometime around the Xmas holidays. I work in IT as well, and have the CCNP. There is work here, but you will be looking at working in and around london (mostly). The money in london is good but it is expensive to live there. There is work throughout the country for Cisco stuff but more so in London. Try looking at www.jobserve.com or www.hays-it.co.uk for a starter. If you get you CCNA before you come out that will open a few doors depending on your experience.

What's the chances of me getting a job in Perth with a CCNP?? Any pointers??

Sy, any information at all is appreciated and thanks. I would like to know positions will be available before making the big move.... If your moving here there is Cisco positions available, although Im not sure entirely to what scale. Try checking out http://www.netlinkcrm.com.au/ as they are a good networking company in Perth and they do take Cisco qual's/
As for working around London, this is ok as long as the work is such that I will be able to afford it. My experience is mainly computer tech stuff, but should I need to I could probably have the knowledge to quickly get MCSE and CCNA. If you know of any contacts over there that would be appreciated.

The Jobserve Website is pretty good and most jobs are current, although you will find the same jobs advertised time and time again with different agents. My field is AS400, I find the money really depends on the type of company you work for, not so much the location, Banks and Communication companies pay pretty well, manufacture companies like the one I'm with now are dire, but not so bad if you manage to Contract, watch out for IR35 though.

That link you gave was useful cheers. My best advice to yourself is to get some of your qualifications sorted before you come out. Nothing better to back up your experience than with a certificate. It will help when you initially apply for work, after that it's down to the experience!!

Agree with Santa, if you can get work with a Bank, etc they do pay well. If you can get contract work even better, but this is pretty tight at the moment due to down turn in the industry. The thing that will cripple you most is living expenses(again this depends on location). Have you got mates to stay with when you arrive? If so this will help somewhat. other useful URLS to look out for are:

there are loads of agents, check out the serach engine www.google.co.uk. Why not send you resume (CV over here) to companies that you might like to work for, eg, ISP's Banks etc. go onto their websites, get a contact, ring/email for the details of the personnel or IT manager, and send you CV with a covering letter saying why you should work for them. Saves them loads (no agent) and you will find vacancies that aren't advertised. Has worked for me in the past!

As well as London, consider areas west of London where the M4 motorway runs. The Finance companies have all the decent property leases in London and many tech companies are moving West. You get London wages but house prices are slightly cheaper - And if some of your contracts are in London you can get there within an hour from towns like Reading and Bracknell. IT has slowed here a little, but people are realising that it's a necessary part of business so good people are always employed.
