Default Gated Community vs Free Standing Home

We are looking to move to the North Lakes region is Brisbane. I am flying upo next weekend to secure a rental property. We would like a pool. However, a majority of the homes with pools are in complexes. We are a family with 2 children. These areas look lovely I just wonder if they are more suited for "mature adults" rather than famillies. Anyone lived in a gated community/complex ? Any thoughts ?

Gated communities are silly, you still have to leave them to go to work etc

I wouldn't mind living in one ... as long as the gates were a bloody long way away and everyone was on acreage.

Had a work colleague that used to live in a gated community and he found the whole thing too sterile and organised.
