Default gas fitters in the eastern states

Hi

Is there any gas fitters living over east of Oz?

Just wondered how the job situation is over there, not sure what states accept City and Guilds, just know that Perth doesn't!.

thanks

Sorry for going off track a bit, but I have been following your posts as my husband is also a gas fitter looking at moving to Perth,

Can I ask why you are now considering moving to the eastern states, as I also notice thewoods are looking at the same thing

Is there a problem for Plumbers/Gasfitter getting work in Perth?

Hi there abergas,

We're off to Brissy in August , looking at whats advertised there seems to be plenty of plumbing vacancies, from what i can gather you can get a plumbing licence if your city and guilds but gas courses have to be taken again.
I might get corrected on this but thats how i read it at the moment.

all the best plum

Hi Abergas,

Since telling of your plight about the job situation with hubby, everywhere I go, I keep looking for vans with companies that are gas fitters. I haven't seen any in the couple of weeks I have been looking. The only one I saw was a man with his own business that had come out to the Restaurant next door, but he wasn't local.
Still keeping my eyes peeled.
Hope something turns up for you.

I live on the Gold Coast, about 45 mins from Brisbane. Word of advise. Make sure your City and Guilds say PLUMBING AND HEATING not MECHANICAL SERVICES AND VENTILATION. If they have the wrong wording, you will get the run-around from the Plumbers n Drainage Board. You will also have to go back to college to learn the Aussie standards(didnt know the had any till coming here)Also get use to doing lots of digging as we plumbers over here dig all day!!
Plumbing in Oz is nothing like plumbing back home in the UK. The plumbing here is very techinal ie drainage. It is like something you would see on the space shuttle. I miss radiators!!!!!

Thanks for the link,
Wish in WA the C&G meant more! Hubbys been a gas fitter for 27 years straight from school, you would think experience would count for something, also had to do a course here which he passed with flying colours. I really feel for him, in the UK he was well respected, it must be hard for guys to come here and keep getting knocked back.

thanks again

I don't think so, theres always plumbers work advertised in the West Australian, the experience we have had is they would rather you were a plumber with a licence of course! with gas experience, than a gas fitter with plumbing experience. When hubby did the college course he was told that gas fitting isn't a trade out here!!!

Sorry if I am acting thick, but I know nothing about plumbers and gas fitters, only that plumbers show the crack of their bums, but, is your hubby a plumber aswell or just a gas fitter?

Abergas

Have been following your story for a while now - as we are coming out in January. My hubbie did his full plumbing apprenticeship straight from school (advanced c&G) & then after a while went onto mechanical services & air con project engineer (commercial stuff not domestic). He had a plumbing business for a couple of years ( and was corgi registered) but had to go and get a job with regular money as we had twins!!!

what is the job situation like for his field? Not many jobs advertised under project engineer - do they call them something else over there? Do you know any agencies that would specialise - over here he has had a couple of jobs through Hays Montrose.

He was thinking that is work was hard to come by then he may fall back on his plumbing - but you say that c&G are not recognised & he would have to take some exams -is that right?

Cannot beleive that gas fitters are not classed as a trade in Oz - over here it is highly regarded - in fact you need loads of certificates to even look at a gas appliance!!

Hubby thinks that radiators could be on the way back to Oz as Expats like the traditional heating (when the winter sets in)

Good luck with the job search. Sorry for all the questions but any insight from someone in the trade would be great.

good luck

pockygoes

PS hoping to settle in Secret Harbour

Is it that bad on the Gold Coast ? I thought that plenty of building work was still going on, and that work for most trades would be plentiful.
