Default Gas fires at reasonable prices....

Has anyone had a new gas fire installed recently down here in sunny Aus....I'm looking for a decent one but not silly money, like the $3000 and $4000 that most places seem to ask..??

On the same thread.....why are the gas fires soooooo expensive..... They start at about $2000 and go upto about $6000 for a simple looking affair.

Maybe it has something to do with demand and supply. Most winters lately are a lot milder than before, so there is maybe not as big of demand as it wold be during winter, say in the UK. It might pay to wait until winter is over now it is October for retailers have their end of season sales to clear current stock.

Got to say, Gas Fires probably have the biggest price difference of any single item on a cost comparison basis between the UK and Aus....

4K for a decent fitted Gas fire... You can get close to two fitted inverter split system air cons for that... which are just as cheap if not cheaper to run, and cool your house in the summer.

Would I be right in saying there would be more demand and choice in the UK than here? (speaking from an Aussie's point of view)

Personally I would rather the ducted/reverse-cycle air-con than a gas heater for safety any day - much safer.

Yes correct, heaps more demand. Still despite that I cant think of anything else that is around 300pct more expensive in Aus than the UK. IE: Winter Coats in Brisbane etc.... Or maybe they are ?

A good unit, with a good CoP is roughly comparable in terms of running costs with gas (taking into account that the headline CoP is never what you get when you NEED the heating). To that should be added the utility of being able to run them for cooling in summer, and the greater competition in suppliers.

Kind of makes it a no brainer.

I'd tend to run them in concert with solar PV to offset the electricity demand/bills.

Oh, and truly intelligent control to route the air exactly where you need it.

If you want the designer thing, look towards a log fire. Not much use for heat, but looks nice.
