Default Gas engineer coming to Brisbane please help

Hi Guys im looking for some help related to work in Brisbane for a gas engineer.
Is there much work in Brisbane for a gas engineer?
Can i work self employed when i arrive?
Whats the average wage per year as an employed gas fitter?
Whats the average hourly rate?
Im also a Plumber would there be more demand for that?

Thanking you all for your replies in advance

Also one other silly question, Are spiders and insects really as bad in Brisbane as my wife keeps making out to me? She is worried about our kids coming in touch with these types of things?????

Thanks again.

No. Teach your kids not to touch anything in nature and they should be fine.

Thanks again.

Answers in red above.

I very much doubt it
Can i work self employed when i arrive?
NO, expect a minimum of 3 but more ikely 6 months before your license is granted. First off is Registering as a Gas engineer involving a test on AS
602... then application and test for "Licensed GasFitter" status, obtain Insurance and present to the Plumbing Industry Commission before license is granted

Whats the average wage per year as an employed gas fitter?
Probably earn more as a checkout operator at Coles
Whats the average hourly rate?

Only if you are a time served plumber i.e. seperate City & Guilds cert. Possibly may have to sit tests at a local TAFE to prove you are conversant with Australian Standards

Thanking you all for your replies in advance

So Rossi i take it you were corgi before making the move to oz? are you still involved in the plumbing trade out there?

I pretty much thought that due to the weather in oz that heating is used very little.
What in our line of work would you recommend that would give me a good start to life in oz?

Air con?

Similar kind of work........... Cryogenics & Industrial gases - oxygen, nitrogen, argon etc.

I mentioned it in a previous post - it's such a specialised field that there aren't a lot doing it.

I would recommend ... Beer plumbing..... carbon dioxide systems / regulator servicing etc. AS5034 ( the new dispensing gas standard recommends servicing 6 & 12 monthly) there isn't enough people doing it

Hi,
OH is a plumber and we have been here 6 months and no luck with work yet, just the odd private job.
There are jobs advertised online but you will never hear anything from them, some are agencies looking for people to get n their books, others are gone before they hit the press.

You need to contact the Plumbers and drainage board QLD and get a provisional license, you can do this before you arrive, this will allow you to work as a plumb and gasfitter but only under someone that has a full license -so you can't work self employed or sub-contract. When you arrive you can do a course that will give you a full license but it will take 6 - 12months - it is $4000 for plumb, drains and gas available at Tafe and skillstech, but once you have the license you don't need to renew it and you are then able to go SE and subbie.

Plumbers get between $20 - 30hr, so yes not much more than a coles employee, although when you are SE you can charge around $70/80hr.

The bugs aren't as bad as you may imagine, we have a 4yr and 2yr old and we have had no probs, it's the jelly fish you want to worry about! No, seriously, you will be fine.

The prob with jobs at the mo is that with so many people out of work there are hundreds of applicants for 1job, and being new with no Oz experience and only a prov license it is really hard. I hope you have more luck than we did Goodluck with the move.

Just to note, there is a very low proportion of the Brisbane poulation with reticualted domestic gas supplies.

There is little call for gas-space heating in QLD, most wull use reverse cycle air con or oil filled standalone radiators.

Given the lack of demand for space heating it is relatively uneconomic to provide reticualted gas supplies as the only other use is for cooking. Many who prefer to use gas fro cooking therefore have LPG bottles delivered.

There are about 170,000 households in Brisbane who have reticlated gas. Main suppliers (if I remember correctly) are AGL and Origin Energy.

Why dont you move to Melbourne almost fully reticulated and 80% of homes use gas for heating cooking and water heating.
