I feel better about our last bill now! We paid $400 with Red Energy for water, heating and stove for 2 months for a 120sqm house (not what that is in "squares".
I thought $400 was really high but the company did send us a little flyer with the bill giving the Victorian average consumption and we were under so I guess we're doing OK... |

Gas is expensive in Oz full stop!
According to British Gas, the average UK gas bill is £602 to £720 per year. Australian averages, according to some info that I have seen, show that an average Australian house uses about 25.1 MJ and 41.8 MJ per day. However I saw a survey in 2006 which showed the average gas use for Sydney Metropolitan households was 58Mj per day. Based on that, and the prices locally for us, the average costs work out at:
using the Energy comparison website switchwise, I found these average annual gas bills for 4 bedroom houses in specific locations.

Re: Gas Bill question
I'd need to dig out our gas bill for VIC but actually $1300 might be pretty accurate although it still surprises me even in summer the gas bill when it's just hot water and hob. Although I did read somewhere that hot water does take quite a lot of gas which would account for it.
We try not to use too much - hot water and heating about 1/2 hour in morning and 2 hours in evening, otherwise we shut ourselves in the office with an electric fire but even so the gas bill is still heaps more than the UK ever was. Just working out our gas bills in UK were direct debit 24 pounds a month and we used to get around 80 quid rebate at the end of the year. That was hot water, hob and as said earlier warm as warm can be so that worked out at 200 pounds a year. I try to limit the amount of heating here because it is just like burning $$$ I can have it on then feel cold 10 mins later, if I had it on enough to feel warm all day we'd be having bills higher than Martin Luther for sure! Okay we are in rented and can't do anything much about anything, which is why I'm pinning hopes on new house! We've positioned the new house to catch the sun, the bedroom is in the coolest part which should be good for summer and the office is in the warmest part - hopefully! Just also hoping a new system and insulation will make a difference - even if it doesn't cut bills just so we can feel warmer. It has been a much colder winter down here this year and very wet which makes it feel even colder. The local yokels keep saying this is what VIC winters used to be like and even they are moaning how cold it is! |
