The Garretts in SA
Hi all
We are now in adelaide, we flew over yesturday with virgin blue, (nice new fleet) it only took 2 and a bit hours (only $139 each) . We have rented a car for a week to drive to Melbourne.also, make sure you get an estate (wagon) cos our four cases won't fit in our saloon!!
(aim to be there around the 9th)
The weather here is very hot, but gets cold at night. Adelaide seems to be a beautiful city with lotsof old buildings (well old for Oz!) We havn't got a clue what to look at though as we have no guide books or anything, but we are heading off to the murray river region sometime tomorrow.
We are also travelling along the great ocean road. Anyone got any tips on great things to see along route??
Hope everyone is doing ok, but don't have time to answer all e mails and stuff as other people, and our kids harras us the whole time we are on the one pc!!

Garrat.
If you've time in Adelaide itself, get yourself and Mat up to the Barossa Valley. Nice wine tasting and all that. There's a famous English sweet shop in one of the Lutheran villages.

You've got to go and see the 12 apostles, it really is awesome. The best time to go is at sunset and if you hang around for 10 minutes or so after it goes dark, you'll see an amazing site!!
Take your binoculars and look down to the right hand side of the walk way. You'll see penguins coming into nest for the night. They are so funny. They do a head count every time a new group swims in and if their friend/mum/dad are not in the group, they wait around until the next group comes in on the next wave. Once they are with their companion, they waddle up to the top end of the beach.
Its truly fantastic to see.
Did you know that The Great Ocean Road was built to generate employment after the Great War. Work began in 1918 and they didn't complete it until early 1930's. Just a bit of trivia there for ya! :lecture:

Cape Otway is the lighthoue that Jane was referring too - and I agree, don't waste the money going up the lighthouse! There are koalas down that way - and also in other places along the GOR. I've seen them twice at Cape Otway and once between Lorne & Apollo Bay.
Whereabouts are you joining the coast road? If you're coming from Mt Gambier, then Cape Bridgewater is beautiful and very relaxing (nothing to do there basically except walking and enjoying the coastline. There are seal colonies if you walk out along the headland). Port Fairy is a pretty liitle village. Port Campbell is a great place to stay - close to 12 Apostles, London Bridge, Loch Ard Gorge - which are ALL must-see. Port Campbell has quite a few motels & B&Bs, a handful of restaurants to choose from and a pretty good pub!
There are some beautiful waterfalls along the GOR as well. If you've got the time, park up the car and take a walk through the forest to a waterfall. Beauchamp is my fave (and the one that is pictured in this site which lists all the waterfalls along the GOR)http://www.greatoceanrd.org.au/highl...waterfalls.htm
Lorne is a popular village, although it can get very busy at weekends and holidays - it's popular a popular weekend escape for the city folk, many of whom have holiday apts there.
Torquay is the other main town before Geelong - a great surf spot. Lots of surf superstores too (RipCurl, Quicksilver, etc) if you need to stock up on summer gear!
Official GOR website is http://www.greatoceanrd.org.au/index.asp
Coonawarra is definately worth a trip if you like your wine - lots of big-name wineries here, cellar door tasting and sales etc - just on the SA side of the SA/Vic border.
If you are coming the inland route from Adelaide then the Grampians are very scenic - you'll see lots of wildlife there too. From the Grampians you can just head due south and pick up the GOR round about Portland.
Have a lovely trip - GOR is definatley one of the most beautiful parts of Oz.
